Steve,
Are Bose good? yes. Would i buy them? no.
Here's the thing. Bose makes a decent product, but they market it very well, and price it way to high for what you get. Marketing is the key here. See the term you use "2.1 home cinema" is a great example of that. 2.1 in not cinema no way no how. for over 30 years cinemas have Had more than 2 channels so how can they say "home cinema" It may sound great but the term adds nothing to the credibility. What Bose is know for is a "reflective" sound essentially bouncing sound off all the walls then back to you. it makes you feel like sound is all around you and it is, but the sound quality of that sound is not that great. additionally having the sound reach your ear at different times will cause listening fatigue. A good speaker with a good sound-stage and presence will blow the doors off of a comparatively priced Bose system.
I recommend to take the advise of your ears and your ears only. go to some reputable audio dealers (not best buy or cc), and take a listen to what they have, you'll be astounded at how good a system can really sound without a expensive price tag and without being surrounded with speakers.

NO! Bose is pure, unadulterated CRAP.
Buy
Other
Speakers
Everytime.
Ever wonder why they spend SO MUCH MONEY on advertising? It's because they need all that effort to convince people that Bose is actually a good speaker. Which it isn't.
A REAL speaker company, that makes quality speakers, knows that their products will sell themselves. Ever seen commercials or ads for B&W? Or Axiom? Or M&K? Or Magnapan? Probably not. Companies like B&W have been around for many decades. They know what they are doing and they make the best stuff; so much so that they don't even really need to advertise, and their speakers still have no trouble selling for many thousands of dollars.
If you think Bose is good, do yourself a favor and find a B&W dealer and take the 600 series for a spin. Your ears will love you!

Hey if you really gotta go 2.1, take a look at the two Denon Systems S101 and S301, They sound great. they have a real sub, serious speaker cable, a $350 DVD is in the 301, and they give you some ability to play with the sound other than just bass and treble. Bose is OK I guess, but why buy that when you can buy something that sounds better for the same cash. Oh Yeah bring some of your CD's to listen and you wont be dissappointed.

Hi Steve.Do you just want 2 stereo speakers plus a sub. What about the amplifier, 2 channels or more .If you can supply that information i can help you out. Thanks.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION :
When you mention "BOSE" you open up a can of worms.!! How can 1 product cause so much controversy ? Who is right . Are they good or bad equipment ? Who do you trust .Let your ears be the judge. In my opinion they are not worth the money but that is just my opinion. Listen to other brands before you choose, that is the best way of buying sound equipment.

If you are willing to buy a BOSE system, get a sunfire sub.
http://sunfire.com/subwoofers.htm
and some decent loud speakers instead.
Bose are not that great. I have a 6:1 speaker setup that will blow bose away at 1/4 volume, and my windows at 3/4!! Lets hear Bose cranked up and you will see. Let it play for a couple if CD,s then it sounds like crap. Can not handle hard, loud playback.

Bose takes a lot of abuse. Rightly so to SOME degree because there can be higher quality products (Klipsh) for one.
But what Bose does it does VERY well.
It reproduces music very nicely, so if you're looking to split its use into that, too, you could do worse.
It's best for small and medium-sized rooms. In larger ones the sound tends to wash out a bit.

Bose is a triumph of marketing over common sense.
Anything else for the same price WILL sound better - absolutely anything...

Bose are splendid as they are a company solely concerned with audio equipment, they got a bad rep from audiophiles because they advertise heavily and their kits work straight out the box. Check out JBL too.
If you dont go out during daylight and obsess over sensitivities and cable choices am sure there are better products around but hearing is entirely subjective.
I have hifi seperates in every room comprising of speakers: missions, B&W, JBL, Bose and I'm quite happy with mine as I got em for an absolute bargain (£30) cos I worked for a retailer at the time. Anyway, if you go down to a store like Practical Hifi tell them your budget and dont act like a know it all stats geek (I used to hate them, like being at a bad pub quiz) they will do some hook ups for you and will be overjoyed to explain any jargon in plain english, just be sure to take a cd and DVD you love with you and let your ears be the judge!
