Specifically, the transmission sometimes won't shift into 2nd gear. This happens from a cold start. The RPMs build up to 2500, but it still won't shift - sometimes. When this happens, I shut it off, start it again, and it will shift just fine. However, it will shift just fine from a cold start most of the time. I drive it everyday and it's been doing this almost three weeks. What do I need to replace?

it is a diesel that is the trouble. next the starter goes out then the injection pump....sell it while you still can
the trans needs to be rebuilt now

depending on the miles you have on the truck, I would bet it is merely the "throttle position sensor" is going bad.

I have owned 6 Dodges with the Cummins TD with 5 of those being auto tranny. that is the only thing I have ever had to do to any of these trucks... all except my current one, had over 200K miles on them when I traded in on a new one just to get more features. I run lots of highway miles (like 40-50K a year) with about 15-20% of the time pulling a pretty good load... never shelled a tranny.

take your truck to a reputable transmission shop and ask them to hook up their electronics to check the throttle position sensor and make sure you have $300-350, cause that's what it should cost to have it replaced, only takes them about an hour to do the work.

Put a scanner on it, alot of people think they are missing 2nd gear when it's actually 3rd! 3rd gear set up weak from the factory. If it's 3rd gear the tranny will need to come out. If it is 2nd gear your governer pressure is probably too high and you could knock it down by adjusting your gov pressure screw on the side of your valve body 3/16 ground allen wrench. be needed for that. Check it for codes first to make sure.

do not go to wal mart and buy "SNAKE OIL" for your trans since you shut it off and restart and it is ok that makes me think it is an electronic problem most likely a throttle position sensor or a governor pressure transducer hope this helps

sounds like a sticky shift solenoid... go to wal mart & get some trans-X (about $5) try this & see if it helps.... this is usually a sign of maybe a piece of one of the clutches or "O" rings in the shift solenoid, or stuck in the valve body..

The transmissions in these vehicles are notoriously poorly made, I think your warranty is still good, call a dealer or get in contact with dodge directly.

You may have dirty trans fluid, or a sticky valve body. Have a pro check it out.
