Hi,
I'm getting married at the end of July.
We are having a wedding with just 2 witnesses to save hassle and money.
Do you have to say vows in order for it to be legal or can you just sign the register?

No one at the courthouse will know if you or anyone else at the ceremony read vows, so I suppose all you have to do (legally) is sign the documents.

That said, I'm pretty sure that any justice of the peace will want to at the very least ask you personally if you agree to the wedding, which will probably come in the form of some standard vows that he'll read.

The wedding must be performed by a qualified individual (clergy, justice of the peace, judge, whatever) and he says the specific vows and you repeat after him and unless you do it is not official. Repeating the vows indicates that you both enter into the state of holy matrimony willingly and of sound mind and all that. Good luck and God Bless. Don't forget to apply for your marriage license and all.

You don't have to have vows necessarily, but you have to have someone preside over the ceremony (like an officiant) and they have to ask you if it is your intention to marry the other person somehow. Even if it is just do you agree to marry this person and you say yes. The person that presides over the wedding has to sign the marriage license, and they have to be legally qualified to sign the license.

You don't have to say anything, but you might want to say a little something . wedding vows have nothing to do with being legally married, as long as someone is there, that's all that matters. By the way, good idea on saving time and money,I would do the same thing, if I could start over again.
good luck and much happiness to both of you

As soon as you sign, you are concidered legally married.

But why not write your own vows, that appeal to you? I wrote our vows.
They don't have to be long and flowery...just write what you both feel is your commitment to each other.

Ask the officiant or ask the courthouse/ place where you get your license. There seem to be a lot of different answers on here about this so you might want to ask, especially since you never know if the rules are different in different states.

you cannot be married without saying vows. just basic "I do's" because it is technically a binding agreement. and the judge, magistrate, mayer, jp, priest, or whoever has to sign the document to and be present
