my son had to start working in the galley on his ship in the navy. He is really nervous about it. Why do you get picked to do this? Is it really bad to work in?

Everyone has to do it, and to answer the first guy nucs have to do it to, it just depends on the ship. The only way to "luck" out of it is if you report to a ship that is really undermanned in your divsion and can't afford to let you go. It's a shitty job but a good way to show what you made of to those it matters to.

Someone has to work in the galley, or the sailors don't eat.

I boot you take tests that give them an idea of what you are best suited for and that is what your MOS will be, if his MOS is, lets say, Machinists Mate and thats the job he does, then he as will all pull TAD duty one month a year such as Guard duty or mess duty, something like that

EVERYBODY reporting to their first ship has to mess Crank. It's no biggie. it's just a way for them to get used to life on board the ship.
