The Soviet Union and Great Britain.
Honestly, Great Britain held out during the Battle of Britain and helped refine the radar systems.
The Soviet Union's determination and ruthlessness pushed the Nazi armies back.
The Americans just added that last touch.

The United States.
With all due respect to the people that say the Soviet Union was the most responsible, I can't agree. The Soviet Union did play a huge role, but there is one fact you can't ignore. Without the U.S. there would not have been a Western front. Without the U.S. there would be no D-Day. In other words, Germany could have put all of her army into the attack on the Eastern (Russian) front, and would probably have defeated them. At the very least, the Germans could have kept the East at a stalemate. It in only because of the U.S. that the Germans had to keep a 2nd front open, thus dividing their forces and allowing the Soviet Union to advance. France was already defeated, the U.K. did not have the ability to cross the channel. It was only the massive amount of supplies and men that came from the U.S. that allowed D-Day to happen.
Every participant was important, but the U.S. was the deciding factor.

The fate of the second world war rested on the outcome of Operation Barbarossa. Like the guy above said, the rest of the theatres of operation were side shows. Consider the following:
Just to give you an idea of battle deaths on both sides check these out:
EASTERN FRONT:
Stalingrad: 1.8 million
Siege of Leningrad: 1.5 million
Moscow 1941-42: 700,000
Smolensk 1941: 500,000
Kiev 1941: 400,000
Vorenesh 1942: 370,000
Belarus 1941: 370,000
2nd Rzhev-Sychevka: 270,000
Caucasus 1942: 260,000
Kursk: 230,000
Lower Dnieper: 170,000
Kongsberg: 170,000
Rostov: 150,000
Budapest: 130,000
and others with less killed
Whereas on the Western Front
Battle of France 180,000
Normandy: 132,000
El Alamein: 70,000
Battle of the Bulge: 38,000
Not even on the same scale....do the math....

Soviet Union. The whole Western Front plus the Desert plus everything else outside the Pacific was a side show. The war's greatest general was not Eisenhower or Montgomery: it was Georgi Constantinovich Zhukov. And it's a disgrace that more Americans do not know that Marshall Zhukov did more than any other man on earth to defeat the Hitlerite war machine....and that he was purged by Stalin because Zhukov was more popular (with the people and with the party) than Uncle Joe.

I would say that a combined effort by Great Britain,Russia and the US as the majors players, along with help from Canada,Sweden,Greece, and others,Russia took the worse beating because most of the battles were fought in it's own land so they suffered the most casualties,Great Britain with it's naval power kept the german navy in check, while the US's industrial and military might finally was to much for Germany and Japan to overcome

Its the US by far, the UK was in major trouble without US aide before it entered war and the US becoming a full ally pushed Germany efforts back to their homeland more. And without a second front opened by the US/UK on the West there has to be some question if the USSR could of staved off Germany forever. Plus the industrial complex of the US really helped supply the Allies and win the war overall.

Hmmmm...I would say USA but Since UK had already been weaking the Axis it is hard to say 100% US.
I will say officially i think it was UK. They fought them much longer than US and stayed fighting till the end from the very start...so i gotta give them #1 status
If you had said WW2 totally I would say US since we fought almost alone in Pacific but you specified against the Germans so gotta go with UK
cybersharque> well they were Hitler's allies too and had a hand in causing the war so nuts to them
Smartassus> Nope you got it all wrong

It would have to be the Russians. They poured every last man, woman and child into saving their country from the German occupation. And, Hitler poured everything he could into killing millions of Russians. Unfortunately for Hitler, he underestimated the tenacity of the Russians during his final assault, along with the allied invasions.
6 million dead, and the Russians still kicked German butt on the front. Everybody had something to do with winning, but Russians lost the most and had the most to lose! I give it to the Russians.

Probably the Soviet Union. German General staff studies before the war indicated that if Germany did not defeat the Soviet Union by 1944, it probably couldn't. Three quarters of the German Army faced the Russians, but Allied Bombing benefited them too.

Soviet Union by far. Any other answer is plain wrong. Zhukov is over-rated as a strategist but he is the one that surrounded the Germans at Stalingrad and changed the course of the war.
