The word "Muslim" means one who submits to the will of God. This is done by declaring that "there is no God except one God and Muhammad is the messenger of God". In a broader sense, anyone who willing submits to the will of God is a Muslim, thus all the prophets preceding the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) were Muslim. The Qur'an specifically mentions Abraham who lived long before Moses and Christ that, "he was not a Jew or a Chrisitian bu a Muslim," because he had submitted to the will of God. Thus there are Muslims who are not submitting to the will of God and there are Muslims who are doing their best to live an Islamic life. One cannot judge Islam by looking at those Muslims who have a Muslim name but in their actions, they are not living or behaving as Muslims. The state of being a Muslim can be according to the degree to which one is submitting to the will of God, in his beliefs and in his actions.

The religion of Islam was begun early in the 7th century by a man named Muhammad who claimed to have been visited by the angel Gabriel. During these angelic visitations, which continued for about 23 years until Muhammad's death, the angel Gabriel revealed to Muhammad the words of God (which is Allah in Arabic) in Arabic. These dictated revelations comprise what is collectively known as the Qur'an, Islam's holy book. Muslims, the followers of Islam, believe the Qur'an to be the preexistent and perfect word of Allah.

Islam is a monotheistic religion originating with the teachings of Muhammad, a 7th-century Arab religious and political figure. The word Islam means "submission," or the total surrender of one's self to God. Islam's adherents are known as Muslims, meaning "one who submits (to God)". There are between 0.9 and 1.3 billion Muslims, making Islam the second-largest religion in the world, after Christianity.
Muslims believe that God revealed the Qur'an to Muhammad, God's final prophet, and regard the Qur'an and the Sunnah (the words and deeds of Muhammad) as the fundamental sources of Islam. They do not regard Muhammad as the founder of a new religion, but as the restorer of the original monotheistic faith of Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and other prophets. Islamic tradition holds that Judaism and Christianity distorted the messages of these prophets over time either in interpretation, in text, or both.

Generally speaking a religion that accepts both the stories from the Torah and new testament, but focuses more on the message given by the Angel Gabriel and believe that Muhammad is the final prophet.
