White is seen as a spring/summer color. In the days before washing machines, white was very hard to keep clean. In the fall, that is when it would start raining, and the ground would get muddy. Also, the rain would make cloths on th upper body an off white color after a while if they are not washed in a machine. In the winter, snow would do the same thing rain did. In the spring, after the ground thawed, and dried out, somewhere around mormorial day, white was in fashion again since there was less to make it dirty. It's just one of those things that has stuck around. But, it doesn't hold up in society now.

It has to do with seasonal clothing choices. You wouldn't wear wool in the Summer, would you? Most people follow the rule that you do not wear white after Labor Day or before Easter. The color is bright and seems out of place in cold, dreary weather. You can wear other shades of white without seeing a lady bat an eyelash, though. You probably only heard about the rule in movies if you were not raised in the South, as it is fairly obsolete now. In fact, when Emily Post's Etiquette was last revised, it advised women that they could now wear white after Labor Day. Thank goodness for those of us living in warm weather!

It's an old-fashioned rule that you don't wear white between labor day and easter. The weather is traditionally bad in most places in the winter so wearing white isn't practical. I doubt too many people really follow this anymore. I don't wear white shoes in the winter (except tennis shoes) and it probably stems from my grandmother telling me not to!

jeez, ok. There's always the Labor Day White sales, you don't wear white after Labor day because its a faux paus to be seen in Sale rack clothing. Like the white sales at jcPenneys are always Labor Day. Make sense now?
Personally, I don't care. if its white and cute, I'll wear it anytime I want.

It is an old and obsolete rule of etiquette. White is okay for casual summer wear but not when we're back in the real world. Today this is absurd so just ignore it.

Have fun.

actaully its not a 'rule' anymore. only, in the winter, "winter white" is what most people wear, as in a cream or a not so bright white. but wear whatever you want, the rules of good fashion arent strict like they used to be. that said, spandex, fanny packs, and sweaters w/embroidered scenes are NOT ok!

It is an old rule that was around in my childhood. You also never wear white shoes before Easter Sunday.
