I'm amazed. The whole point of Christianity is supposed to be the transition from Lex Talionis - the eye-for-an-eye philosophy - to a degree of forgiveness, symbolised by cheek-turning.
Although this progression has nothing to do with Jesus, it's an important step in civilisation, because it's more efficient.
I'd expect Christians to know this, but where are they?

I think it depends on the situation. If a person does something bad to me but it doesn't affect me in a serious way... can easily let it go (turn the other cheek)...but if someone does something to me and threatens my life I will defend myself. Like if someone commits a violent crime towards me or my family I will defend myself and/or call the police department. If a woman get's raped should she turn the other cheek, say rape me again? No she should report the rapist to the police.

Pray, trust God for the outcome and believe that whatever the outcome, God is sovereign over ALL. God equips the call not call the equipped. In my flesh I will definately want to punch him out but my Spirit speaks of love. Love is the greatest and that is what Jesus taught. (Turn the other cheek doesn't mean you're a coward, it means you are strong and love never fails).

Jesus says that turn the other cheek takes precedence over an eye for an eye.

well, "eye for an eye" is an animal defensive response to an attack. "turn the other cheek" is a spiritual response indicating that returning violence for violence isn't worth lowering oneself to base animal defensive reflex.

I don't make decisions based on mythology, I think for myself and decide according to the situation.
