Unfortunately if the police told you he would let you slide it does not legally bind him to not charge you for the brake light and you would have no case. The way you write this it sounds like both charges are listed on one citation. If this is the case, in most states than you were probably just charged with the tag violation. The officer may have just wrote the brake light charge on the citation to show why he pulled you over, but he would normally write you two citations separately if he hit you with both. My feeling is that is the case. In addition as the other user indicated all you need to do in fix your brake light and get a receipt and the Judge will dismiss it anyway. Also, just renew your tag and he will probably do the same for that. Not a good idea to call the police jerks as they may save you or your families life some day. Attitudes like that can result in you getting more tickets in many cases. If it turns out he only charged you for one violation then you really owe the guy an apology for sure. All my best and good luck!

Go get your equipment fixed and your plates renewed and get a receipt for the repairs/tags. Present the receipt to the judge and ask if the charge can be dismissed. If not, ask the judge for deferred adjudication. If you're a good girl for a year or however long they'll defer for, the charge will be dismissed. You'll still have to pay a fine and court costs but at least it won't go on your record. Be aware that not all states/municipalities will grant deferred adjudication but it's worth a try. Remember, The most important thing to them is that they get a chunk of your money....

He wrote you for it so the charges will go to court that way. If you tell the ADA when you get to court that you fixed the brake light (show a receipt) and the officer told you he wasn't going to charge you with it anyway he'll probably dismiss the charge. I wouldn't not refer to the officer as a jerk in court though. That won't win you any friends there.
I'm sure you never made a mistake at work though so I guess you are entitled to throw stones. I hope you teach Frankie better manners and respect then you are exercising.

Well, since that officer is not the judge, it doesn't matter.
More than likely, they cited you for the faulty equipment and expired tags, but only charged you with the tags violation.
Basically, pay the fine and move on. You got caught - face up and pay your fine.

Extremely unlikely on legal grounds. What the police officer told you isn't binding on the State under the circumstances you described. Unfair but true.

don't see the problem. easy to fix the brake light, possibly just the bulb. take your receipt in and show it to the judge; charge dismissed. get the plates renewed before court and get that charge reduced or dismissed as well.

From your question I would suspect that initially he was going to cut you a break - but then you did something to change his mind.

Cops are always right, no matter what they say (it's a common tactic of theirs - to lie). It's how they get what they want out of you. Your best bet is to keep on extending your court dates and hope the cop doesn't show up. Then they will dismiss your case.
