A mortar is an indirect fire weapon such as artillery. It is normally fired by using aiming post. There is a sighting device on the mortar that allows you to aim at the post. This has level bubbles on it so you know if it is aimed right. When you find out where the target is and how far away it is you set the direction and elevation on the sight. When you aim at the post and the bubbles are level you are aimed in the right direction and can start dropping rounds.

I guess that all depends on what you mean by "aiming".
If you think you're going to put a mortar round reliably on the same square centimeter every time you drop in a round, think again. The mortar is an area weapon, and it's flight characteristics make it fairly imprecise. Five rounds fired from exactly the same settings will hit five different places, but all within a few meters of each other.
Basically, if you're in a hurry, you place the mortar buttplate on the ground, spread out the bipod, and align the system in the general direction of your target. Using the range and azimuth, plus some info on weather conditions, you can adjust the powder charge to determine how much propellant you're going to use, then you drop in the round and duck. A spotter tells you where the round hit, and you adjust fire from there to bracket -- "walk" the rounds onto your target -- and then fire for effect.
If you've had more time to prepare a firing position, then you can place aiming stakes and calibrate the system, which enables your first round to be much closer to the target, and enables much more rapid effective fire.
A really good mortar crew can drop rounds onto a target with very few adjustments. But that takes lots of practice.

It's a range/azimuth calculation. You then elevate the mortar to the proper angle, point in the right direction, and let it fly.
They're not what one would call an extremely accurate weapon. You have to "walk in" the rounds to what you're trying to hit.

Using an algebraic equation the elevation and wind age is applied to the gun tube. a round is fired and adjusted based on impact.
