The reason I ask is that after a break up with my significant other that person started telling how much they loved their ex and wanted to get back with them. It hurt my feelings obviously. Especially since just a couple days before that person was so loving toward me. Do you think they just want to hurt me or legitimately want their ex back?

both guys and girls do it. I think girls are just more concious about it . I think he wanted to hurt you there could have been a little bit of truth to it but if he was hurt by the break up then he wants to cause you pain and also not let show that he is hurt. You should tell him how you feel about it and then he can be open and tell you if what he did was to hurt you or not ,but dotn make it obvious that it hurt you because if that was his intention then he will be pleased to know his plan succeded. You can also try to hurt him just like he is hurting you but that may only bring you more pain since two wrongs dont make a right . good luck=]

Definitely not a gender-specific trait. Lots of people do it. Lots of people don't. It is more a matter of maturity than gender.
