I would argue that it is impossible for anyone to achieve world domination, yet many people say if Hitler had won WW2 or the Soviets would have won the Cold War they would have subjugated the planet. It is also the goal of many supervillains in movies and cartoons. So is it possible to conquer the world or will there always be a force that rises to resist this?

My answer would be no because there will always be a league of nations who will always resist. Unless all the superpowers joined together and conquer the world to whatever benefit it may give them then I would say that it may be but only for a short amount of time until opposing forces bond together and fight. It is definitely possible to conquer a nation or a number of nations but it is impossible to conquer the whole world. What's the need for it anyways?

First off, the known world has been conquered several times
* Disaster vs. Dinosaurs ... we humans now have the technical capability of protecting our planet from that kind of disaster, but we do not have the political will
* Homo Sapiens vs. CroMag (auto insurance ads notwithstanding)
* Various Religions down thru the ages
* Various empires

As for future conflicts ... figure some present day nations are depleting their resources and the world's resources as if there is no end in sight ... for example the notion that some day we might run out of oil, foreign or domestic, is treated as a controversial topic, until in fact there is none left ... combine that blindness with what various major disasters (natural & man made) can do to our ability to survive ... in many ways our nations are operated by politicians driving at reckless speeds by looking in the rear view mirror to figure out what to look out for. ... what I am trying to say is that the nations well equipped for national defense today, might not be that way for long term.

Remember the fall of former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe Communism, how it seemed extreme threat until it fell, then how fast it fell ... we need to understand how that happened so we can then address question of how fast other branches of civilization may fall in the future.

At the time of WW II there had been a dramatic change in technology increasing the power of the state over the people, making revolution much more challenging. It is worth a review ... the history of revolution
(bloody like the French Revolution ... when unsuccessful get labeled a Civil War)
(peaceful like the Civil Rights Movement ... I not think there been many of those)
(external like regime change ... I figure there have been a score or so in last few hundred years)
to see what the challenges were & the likelihood of that kind of thing again in the future.
