Those that don't want to assimilate don't want to be Americans.

Why should anyone legal or illegal have to or be forced to assimilate into the "American" culture. Why can't people who are from other countries keep their culture, i.e. language, dress, food and religious practices? Does it bother "Americans" that much to see and maybe interact with those who are different than themselves ? The problem with assimilation is that people are expected to completely give up their cultural identities and become like everyone else. I, like a lot of people am against assimilation as it is a completely racist and ethnocentric ideology that maintains the belief that "American" culture is best. I do believe that cultures should be respected and valued and do not have a problem with people who want to speak their language whether it is Spanish or Arabic. I would rather have people who are different than have everyone the same, that is boring. If everyone wants to Americanize these people you would not have yummy Mexican or other food and I am not talking about Del Taco! I also believe that people should learn English because it will make their lives easier but also so that they do not have to deal with racist people who are ignorant and feel they are superior!!!
Everyone who responded to this question is of the opinion that assimilation is good. Well here is a good example of why it is not. In 1878 William Henry Pratt decided that he would open up a boarding school for Native American children because he felt that they needed to be civilized and he wanted to "kill the indian, not the man."Now Pratt was not even an educator he was in the military. Children were taken off their reservations and away from their families to these institutions where they were not allowed to speak their language, practice their religion and were forced to read the Bible, they were given uniforms and given rules to follow. If they broke any of the rules they were severly punished. They were taught that they were savage and inferior to whites. Once the schools closed these children went home and had a hard time adjusting back to their old life.
Instead of assimilation we should strive towards acculturation which implies a merging and mingling of two cultures. It focuses on people learning the culture of the host group while keeping aspects of their own culture.

They don't have too. THere was an article about iraqi war refugees coming here. THe man they interview said thats he's glad he's coming because it's a lot better than his current situation, but worry about the hardship. He had to deal with a new language and a new culture. This man actually has a realistic expectation of immigration. They come in such numbers from latin AMerica, that set up a huge community that thety are putting pressure on us to accomadate them . Also there is some arragance that we should be sensitive to their culture rather but they do not have to be sensitive to ours. If you read the questions and answers here, there are so many illegals that say respect our culture first. They are actually practicing cultural racism. THey believe in their culture is better than us and refuse to follow the rules of entering a country. The UN guideline states that if you enter a country, you must respect their laws and culture. THere is no obligation to do vice versa. Culture is the unwritten rule for a community to get along with each other. There can not by more than one set of rules in a community, because some of them conflict. Our culture does state we should be TOLERANT of other culture, but my interpretation is that if there is any conflict, they must follow our culture. The problem that I see is that when they come here they pick and choose from both culture, and instead of picking stuff that benefits the community, they pick the part of the two culture that benefits themselves. Basically they are abusing the system. We got to stop the belief of multiculturalism and insist in assimilation. I believe part of tolerance means to have patients when they assimilate, but our goal is for them to eventually assimilate.

It is the same thing that every other immigrant influx has done. The Irish were hated, formed their own gangs in Boston, and hung up their own flags. There are complete blocks in NY that belong to different cultures, some of whom don't speak a single word of English. It is the exact same trend that everyone who has ever come to this country has done, legal or illegally. That being said, if you really want to talk about illegal invasions, maybe you should ask a Native American who deserves to be here and who should be sent "home".

I believe, that they really don't want to stay here for the long haul.
it is much easier for them to come here, work, save up money that would be nothing in our economy, but enough to retire in Mexico.
Can't really blame them; after all, some Americans retire and go live in mexico, where their money can actually give them a decent standard of living. If the shoe was on the other foot, many of us wouldn't hesitate to do the same thing.
We just don't like it, because we are the exploited, rather than the exploitee.

The reason is simple: there are too many of them..... more than 10 million. It's a population of New York City!
They know it. Some countries have population less than 10 million.... So, 10 million is a big number and they think US has to put up with it.

Because they are lazy, you know, the same way "we are lazy for not supposedly wanting these jobs."
Really, because we cater to them in Spanish signs, tv programs, etc. We should stop all of this now!!
They only make up 15% of the population so they better learn English otherwise they will always be picking tomatoes.

I hate to sound like a liberal but "It's our own fault."
OK, that's as much of this answer as is going to sound liberal.
Now, I also hate to sound conservative, but the fault of ours that's causing it is called 'multiculturalism.' Illegals (and probably some genuine immigrants, for that matter), aren't just deciding they don't want to assimilate, they're being /told/ by American activists that they /shouldn't/ assimilate, because assimilation is bad, and thier own cultures should be respected and valued.

Illegals?!?!
At this point I'd be happy if the legal ones would assimilate.
At least to the extent of learning to speak English. Lot's of cultures were added to the melting pot, but they didn't demand to be serviced in their native languages, rather than learn English.
