First of all Rangers have been though vast amounts of weapon, tactics and evasion training. Far beyond what any Marine suffers though in boot camp. There not even in the same league.
To compare the few and the proud to the 82nd boys is a closer comparison. Both are high speed soldiers that have been though the basic and MOS (job skill) training. The difference is that the 82nd soldier then goes to basic airborne school in Fort Bening in Georgia, and the standard jarhead doesn’t. (Note: basic airborne school is open to all branches of the service. I went though with a female Marine) I wouldn’t say that the Infantry man that is airborne is more qualified then their ground pounding Marine counterpart.
The best comparison that you could make, from the choices given, is the 101st Infantry to the Marine. Both have completed their standard training at their respective base then sent off to their duty assignment. The 101st is a Division that is living off of the battles of the past. No longer is the 101st an all Airborne Division. Most of the activity that comes from the 101st is though the usage of Helios and Air Assaults (fast rope) tactics. This would compare to the Marines that utilize the usage on the CH-47 and their kick-*** V-22 Osprey. Marines have used (and still are today) choppers to place troops into strategic locations to block, separate and destroy targets.
I think that the basic Infantry Marine is the better choice in combat. I have been in fire fights with Navy, Marine and Army by my side. The Devil Dogs show the most courage and professionalism under fire.

Rangers no..many Marines go through Ranger School...101st yes, because they are just Air Assault Infantry...82nd is Airborne...not sure if the Marines have an Airborne Division...all Infantrymen receive the same training...an Army Infantryman has 13 or so weeks of BCT like the Marine does...the difference is that all Marines are Riflemen first...the Army does not do that...
EDIT: Doc, I too was an Infantry Medic...the Army Special Forces is very small as is Delta...there is only one Regiment of Rangers...so SF is very small...you can not compare a Basic Marine Infantryman to a SF Soldiers (All SF are not only experts in their specific MOS, but speak several languages, and knows all the other jobs within their team...) that is like comparing apples and oranges...I trained with the Marines when I was an Infantry Medic...they are all pretty much the same, but the Marine thinks he is better...

Percentage of deaths from war in Iraq Army 72% Marines 22% Navy 4% Air Force 1% The Marines go in first because they take orders directly from the commander and chief (President). The other branches need the permission from Congress. Their bootcamp it a bit more difficult, 12 weeks instead of 8 and their physical training is much more in-depth. Bootcamp is only a very, very small portion of your military career it shouldn't be the deciding factor. Upon joining the Marines and surviving boot camp you will earn the title of a United States Marine and be apart of Americas elite soldiers. They embrace a mentality of discipline and leadership they are apart of a brotherhood who have earn a reputation and can do more with less. The cons of the Marines is that their budget depends on the Navy which is relatively low compared to the other branches and promotions aren't handed out like candy. The Army has a high mortality rate (They are the biggest branch) it is considerably easier to move through the promotions and they have a lot of technical and support fields to get into. They receive the most federal funding and for that reason are often equipped better and have nicer facilities. Personally, I've noticed they tend to be disorganized more then any other branch, they do good work but I question how "ready" some of them are... It depends on what YOU like. These are just a few elements, its really hard to give you a run down on everything. The most important thing to remember is your serving our country. Don't ask what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country. Marine Corps Poolie

"If you are gonna be a bear, you might as well be a grizzly"
That was the line the Marine recruiter tried to use on me. There is merit to it. Regular marines are considered "elite" troops. While not considered "special forces" (Marine Force Recon is), they are more elite than a standard soldier. A marine infantryman is roughly comparable to an Army Ranger. The 82nd is an airborne division, so they mostly deploy via aircraft. The 101st nowadays is an air assault unit which deploys mostly from helicopters. The Marines deploy from all these mediums, including, and most famously, amphibious assault.
It is said however, that what makes the Marines stand out is their warrior ethos and culture. Once a Marine, always a Marine. You will never find a prouder group of people more willing to fight you if you disrespect the Corps.
Call them crazy, call them dumb, call them bulletsponges that like to die alot, the USMC is one of the finest and most dynamic fighting forces on the planet and I am proud (and grateful) to have them watching my back and protecting my country.

Marine infantry is very good, but Army Rangers are special forces designed to work in small teams with equipment and supplies designed to help the smaller teams. Rangers also recon behind enemy lines and can do search and destroy missions and gather intelligence.
I think in terms of combat ability, Marines are comparable to Rangers, but Rangers have different missions than a Marine rifleman in a MEU, and their training is different than that of Marines. The Rangers do take Marines, though, and a Marine actually won Best Ranger at Fort Benning last year, 2006.

I would say that Marine Infantry is equal to Army Infantry. The Army Infantry goes through 15 weeks of infantry training at the ITB. The Marines do 13 weeks. Most Army infantry also go through airborne or air assault school, your typical Marine doesn't have these opportunities.
Neither are equal to the Rangers or SF.
Rangers complete the 15 week Infantry OSUT, 2 week Airborne school, 3 week Air Assault school and 9 weeks of Ranger school. Many also do 4 weeks of pathfinder school as well.
Army Ranger = 31+ weeks of formal training
USMC Infantry = 19 weeks of formal training
SF guys complete the above Ranger training plus 9 weeks of SF selection (hell), up to a year of SF MOS training and a year of language school.
SF Green Beret = 2+ years of formal training

I was in the army and worked with Marines on a couple of occasions. The Recon Marines are roughly on the same level as a regular Army infantryman. When compared with airborne soldiers, they lack the airborne qualification. Marines tend to be better at sticking to procedures and as much as I hate to admit it are generally better at Marksmanship than regular Army troops. As a general rule however, Marines lack common sense.
Comparing a Marine unit to an Army Ranger Battalion is like comparing a High-school football team to an NFL team. Most Marines would be unable to even physically keep up with a Ranger unit, let alone be able to operate at the level of proficiency that Rangers do. Rangers also have the advantage of having the option to apply for Special Forces or 'Delta Force'.
It depends on what is important to you when comparing the Marines and the Army. If you're looking to be the best warrior you can be, the only option is Army. If you want a gay looking dress uniform, choose the Marines.

Army rangers, yes. 101st/82Nd no no no. but you got to understand the rangers are highly trained and an elite group trained in special warfare and tecneats.but the Marines have their own elite group all so. in WW two they were simply called scouts. you might remember it was the Scouts that went be hind enemies lines and rescued the surviving Bataan p.o.w.'s. in Vietnam they were called special recon. i don't know what they are called now.but about the only thing the Airborne as got on a Marine infantryman is he as been taught how to jump out of a perfectly good running plane.

Rangers is just a glorified infantry they are just the same as a marine infantryman. They are not special forces they are just regular troops with different roles.
