For practice I like the WInchester Value Pack. 100 rounds for $26. Plus you can reload them.
For self defense I like RBCD. Not very well known yet, but getting there. I too have an XD45, and this stuff is impressive. Here's a link to the video, of this stuff in action.
In addition, it's got the ballistic tables for the different calibers.

Mr, how much have you shot your 230 grain Winchesters? I don't claim to be an expert, but you should be more of an expert on your gun anyone else. You've shot your gun more than I have. Take 500 (or how ever many it takes for you to feel comfortable. The more the better, but $$ is an issue) or so rounds of what you want to shoot, and shoot it. If it isn't reliable, switch. Remington and Hornady make good ammo, but frankly I doubt one is "far superior" than the other. XTP's generally aren't as aggressive at expanding as others, but I doubt it matters much. I'd stick with what I can buy in bulk. You can find online sites that sell LEO boxes of ammo (generally have 50 rounds for the cost of 20 premium rounds). Sig makes a great gun. You have to realize that handguns are pretty underpowered, which is why there is a million different little variations on everything. If just one thing worked like a phaser, we'd all use it. (I mean how many different new variations of buckshot are there. . . it hasn't changed, cause it doesn't need to, but that is a shotgun with a 18+ inch barrel.) It is true the ammo we have today is a lot better than we had 20 yeas ago, but any brand name premium ammo is probably just as good as any other. Don't let other people tell you about your gun unless they merit it (being a gun smith may not count).

By trial and error you have to find that which is most suited to your thunderstick for grouping and etc. The nice thing is that there is no such thing as bad 45 acp ammo.

Really the only way to know what ammo your gun likes is to buy different brands and loads and fire them at range. Then you can evaluate them for accuracy and reliability. Sometimes two guns of the same make and model will shoot different with the same ammo.

Best ammo for what?
Plinking? (low price)
Target? (accuracy)
Self-defense? (preformance and reliability)
Remington UMC and Winchester white-box are fine for plinking at a low price.
For target you may want to "roll your own", with WW231 powder and semi-wadcutter bullets. I don't do any target matches, so I don't know who makes accurate paper punching 45's.
For self-defense, any hollowpoint will do - a +P will give some more punch. Federal Hyda-shock, Remington Golden Saber, Winchester Silver-Tip, Cor-Bon, Hornady TAP, Speer Gold Dot, any will do.

I like CCI gold dot in 230 grain for SD and the blazer for practice.
WW makes a good round with their EXP line and their white box shoots fine.

Hornady. They make every type of ammo configuration possible.
