anyone in their community no matter if they are a member or not, no matter the situation. Some churches will bend over backwards to help anyone in need. Other Churches that are of the same faith, equal in size, and obviously have the abilty to help, won't help unless you are a member and when you talk to the members the help they offer is very limited.
Why is this?
I'm not bashing anyone or judging, just curious.

There is this wonderful church that is helping my family greatly, we are not member nor do we intend on becoming members. They don't care at all. We are going to do some volunteer work and do what we can to repay them.
We spoke to at least 16 other churches many with as much or more ability to help and were turned away without any consideration.
I thought all people were supposed to help others when they could regardless of religion or anything else. Maybe I just spent too much time on the rez.

I was at a church leadership summit last year where one of the main speakers was, amazingly enough, Bono. He really floored the room as he talked about the humanitarian efforts he's been participating in as well as his long-term frustration over how slow "the Church" has been to recognize these issues and act on them too.
The room was dead silent as about 4,000 senior pastors sat there and nodded their heads. It's not that anyone is trying to ignore the issues and needs but rather that sometimes a congregation gets so hung up on its own micro-mission and "pet sins" that they loose sight of the good works they were put on this Earth to do.
I think this is changing but sure there are going to be groups that are slower to move than others. It's not "the church" that's at fault but rather the fact that you're dealing with people, all of whom sometimes forget about the big picture and put their egos first.

At least in my mind presently, it boils down to this. We 'Christians' (all congregations)are authorized to help brothers and sisters.
However, to me presently it comes down to is Gen. 20:12; is it 'old testament' or not? By the present addition to God's word; it is. By God's word; no it is not. (the old testament was done away when Christ died on the cross nearly 2000 years ago; Hebrews 7&8). The scriptural old testament
is the law of Moses (2 Cor.3:13-14 KJV). Moses had not been 'born yet' when Gen. 20 occurred.
Christian Apex Col.3:17.

It depends on those in charge and the gifts that they have to see if they will help anyone physically (there are some that go to every church for a handout and are con artists-so there needs to be discernment-the bible says if a person can word and wont work, not to feed them.
Yet all will help them spiritually-if they have the Spirit of Jesus
-I personally help others of any faith-financially to survive and spiritually to conquer-I have paid a muslims outstanding dinner debt and for his breakfast there too-
Yet just to feed the body is empty when we forget about the soul that will change the persons life-give them hope and purpose-this is what changed my life as born a Jew to understand this too=this is what got me to learn this lesson=Satan is not killed-he is sent to torment forever -weeping and gnashing teeth-he too will be given a physical body.
this is what helped me to not to go be with Satan and freed me from his holds over me in religion, materialism and finally in lust and lies=as a Jew I came to believe=the Messiah Jesus promised from beginning Genesis 3:15 to his fulfillment to the last book of Revelation 22
As a Jew to me the prophecies helped me to know him personally-as they led me to his final words before ascending to heaven=Isaiah 9:6 "Unto us a child is born, a son is given, and he will be the mighty God, the wonderful counselor, the everlasting father and the prince of peace."
since the comming of Jesus many Jewish and non Jewish/gentile people believe in him personally, including all the Jewish writers who wrote the entire New Testament as promised in Jeremiah 31:31 ff/and following. "I will make a new covenant unto you, not like the one I made with Moses, and you shall be my people and I will be your God."
this is what helped me as a Jew to make the final breakthrough=praying for you in Jesus amazing grace that saved me=John 3 repented of my sins-even one lie, and asked Jesus in to forgive me and help me do better, and be my friend. amen. Revelation 3:19&20 "I love you and ask you to repent, Behold I stand at your heart door and knock, if you ask me in I will be your friend."
You can't buy true love, and when you have love from above you will have direction to earn money to provide for needs.
Praying for you to be on the winning side truely helping others and not worrying about those that dont and best wishes, David

I haven't seen this happen for myself but.......
Maybe it's just an oversight on the part of the church.
I'm sure if someone asked for help, they would do something.....regardless of membership or not.

Because some congregations are more giving and others don't really care about you unless you're one of them.
