Hi Lorraine, they go through exactly the same stages as kids and at exactly the same stages of their life (using the 7x table in doggy years). Puppyhood, adolesence, maturity etc.,
P.S. Nice dog, my Cavalier stayed with me for 18yrs - if you can only have half the love I had - it will be enough to fill your life forever.

The terrible twos will last until Olly is somewhere between 2 and 3 years old.
He'll demand constant attention, chew things, test limits (as in nicking husband's seat on the sofa)
This is testing limits - by the way. You and husband need to exercise your right as Alpha dogs and put him in his place, like an impolite bratty child.
A good obedience course will do all three of you absolute wonders.

Depends on breed, and gender but any age from 12 -18 months. It sound a bit like yours is trying out his masculinity a bit early!!
Get yourself a copy of "The Dog Listener" by Jan Fennell or "Its me or the Dog" by Victoria Stilwell either will explain how best to deal with dominance behaviour, because that's exactly what is going on.

They do go through the terrible 2's and 3's and 4's. It varies on every dog because of how much training they've had and what they are allowed to get away with in the house such as being allowed on furniture. I have to have a seperate couch for my Great Dane because she is allowed to sit on the couch (no room for me). You have to be strong and firm with him and let him know who the boss is-continue training even if he seems to be questioning you at this point-any continuation of positve training will always help. Good luck:>)

Hi, my dog started about eight months too! Do you leave your pups dinner down all the time if he hasn't eaten it? If you do, he thinks he is better than you because he can eat anytime he wants to.
My german shepherd started to refuse to do as he was told because he thought he was above me in the family.
I now give him a 30 minute time limit when I put his food down. If he hasn't eaten his breakfast in that time then it is taken away and he gets it for his tea.
After a week or so, he started to realise that I was his boss, not the other way round!

He's going through his teenage phase. You have to remember, that what you have trained the dog to do in the past, he might not be so ready to do it any more if you no longer treat him for it. If you don't treat him for it, then why should he do as you ask? Forget the alpha crap. It's a training issue, it sounds like you have stopped because you thought he was trained. No dog is ever trained as it should carry on through the dog's life. He's questioning was to what is in it for him!
Have you had him neutered? It might be time for that too.

lol, believe it or not its around 1 year old, but most dogs would probably be different. My dogs 1 and a half, nearly 2.
when we first got her and took her for walks, she would ALWAYS come back when you called etc...
then she went through about 6 mnths of not coming bak, chewing the backs of shoes, peeing everywhere etc... although she did start coming into season...
now shes fine, although the shoe situation is still happening every 6months or so.

One of the best bits of advice that I was given as young dog handler was to "Never be afraid to go back to square one in training".
The bit of advice that I now give to young handlers is "Never change your mind". Which means if you give a dog a command it has to follow it through to the letter. Even if you countermand it a few minutes later, it has to follow the original command through.
If you put both these bits of sage together you will not go far wrong!
Good Luck
