I don't believe we should preach the Gospel, but to teach it. Not shove it down someone’s throat but to give it to them in bits and pieces. But if God told you to go talk to that person over their in isle 4 would you?

there is a difference in being a witness and being annoying
you cant be a witness if you insult or badger them
and yes I do even go door to door to witness, still following with being friendly and not pushy
the truth is a witness of itself, and I have found the just living right is the best witness of all to those that I see and live near.

Yes, I do have the nerve, but like you I will not go door to door. My home is my sanctuary against the world, violators will be dealt with. I respect the privacy of your home also.
Maybe I would speak to someone in public or maybe I won't. It is not a question of the nerve but rather one of circumstance.
My approach is more within the realms of quitely professing my faith.
EX: Once at work it was necessary for me to do some heavy cleaning and I took off my jewelry in order to protect it. When it was time to replace it my wedding band went rolling across the large floor. Amazingly I found it rather easily and gave praise (Thank you Jesus). Well as you might imagine several people stared at me.
A few days later a co-worker asked me if I "really believed that "Jesus stuff". It turns out that he was looking for information and the Lord used me as a vessel to lead him to Christ.
Some will plant and some will reap....................
sometimes we are lead into just what to do.

Often it is not a good idea to approach a person with that right away, because often it comes across as phony and insincere - nothing is a greater turn-off than that.
Very often, the best thing is to show them your good example first for a while, and then when you start discussing Jesus, you will be credible.

Do you people honestly think we have never heard of your god or your book? The hostility you may feel, is because of the arrogance and outright rudeness that you display by saying things like "have you heard of Jesus".
Of course we have bloody heard of him. Do you think we all live in caves?
Leave us the hell alone, its bad enough to be an idiot, to assume everyone else is as well is just nauseating.

lol I tell people when I think they want to know. I don't just go up to people and shove it down their throats. I've been laughed at many times for it but I just make light of their remarks and stay committed to what I said.

I'm sure that if you're a fine example of Christ's love, wisdom and compassion they'll approach YOU if they're interested. No need to go barking after people.

The Holy Spirit living within believers empowers them to tell others about Jesus Christ and he is the one who convinces the hearers of the truth.

Out of respect for those that think differently from you, it is best not to preach God to anyone. Tolerate even that which you do not understand. Live and let it be.
Edit: you can only teach those willing to learn. Let them ask you.
