my mechanic brother says that means i need a new engine. bit i am having a hard time believing that. what are some reasons for oil in the spark plug chambers?

Anyway you look at this situation you will be putting a fair amount of money into this car.

If you have oily spark plugs your problem is either blown rings or bad valve guides, or both. At any rate you are looking at an engine overhaul to fix the problem. It may be a cheaper fix to see if you can find a used engine with a reasonable number of miles at a salvage yard. I'm guessing that a good used motor will cost you around $300 to $500 plus installation.

An engine overhaul will easily exceed that price.

sounds like you need a new valve cover gasket, spark plug tube seals, plug wires are probably swollen due to oil in tubes and spark plugs

hi
could be worn piston ring of faulty valve seal
do a compression test on the engine
if below 150 need new rings

you do not need new engine just replace the rings

valve cover & sparkplug tower gasket and seal will allow oil on top of plugs hope this solves your problem elmar c
