Labs are pretty smart and VERY loyal, so anything you want to teach your dog he would probably be able to learn. just remember to have patience, and that labs are working dogs so they need to feel like they have a purpose.

Teach him how to come when you call him... first order of business.
Then teach him how to walk a plank... do useful *tricks* kiddo. Take him to a hunting club so both of you can learn and have fun together... (smiles) =
you have a working dog...
not a dog that bounces popcorn off his nose... hahahahhaa

I am glad that you are getting out there and traing your dog! Here are some fun tricks you can do:
1. Roll Over
2. Shake (or like "high five")
3. Beg (or "stand up")
4. Sit
5. Stay

The neatest trick of all is
Obedience!
Labs are really good at this - BTW - and Obedience is a really fun sport - and it is the basis for everything else - therapy, hunting, agility, you name it. It all starts with getting that CD (Companion Dog) certification.

Sit:
hold a treat above and in front of her then push it away from you as you do that your dog will sit and you say "sit"
