There is a scientific term for words in English which have the same origin and sometimes similar meaning but are spelled differently, for example guarantee - warranty or guarderobe - wardrobe.

It has a special term: one word is always of Latin and the other word of Anglo-norman origin. I think something with "twins" or "couple"...

Two different words that mean the same thing are called synonyms. We say they are 'synonymous'. But usually they have different origins.

We have a wealth of these in the English language, partly because England was conquered by so many different people in history who then introduced their own words into our language. The Vikings, the French, etc.

either hononyms or antonyms. oh wait homonyms means words that mean the same thing like: costly, expensive. and antonyms are words that sound the same like: sale, sail.
