A histamine is a substance in your body that triggers your allergy symptoms, and ANTIhistamines are things that block those so that you don't have the symptoms. Some commonly used oned are Sudafed, Claritin, and Benadryl.
Make sure you talk to your doctor before you start taking antihistamines. They have some side effects you need to be aware of...some can make you drowsy, for example, or decrease your respiration a little bit.

An antihistamine is a drug which serves to reduce or eliminate effects mediated by histamine, an endogenous chemical mediator released during allergic reactions, through action at the histamine receptor.
You should go to the doctor so the doctor can prescribe the right antihistamine.

Histamines cause allergic reactions such as itching and hives. Antihistamines block histamines and so relive the itching. You should definitely take some antihistamine such as Benadryl. Be careful though. If you use a cream with benadryl in it you shouldn't take benadryl tablets at the same time.

the hives are created by histimines in your blood. An anti-histimine ceases them.
Benadyrl is an antihisitimine, as are most other over the counter allergy meds.

an antihistamine won't really help with the actual hives themselves-- things that cause your airways to swell and close up are called histamines so antihistamines work to open up your airways and help you breathe better. To get rid of your hives and soothe the itching try some calamine lotion.
*If you are having trouble breathing with your hives, then yes do take an antihistamine, it will help open your airways and make you breathe better.
