My grandmother had a dog that used to grin and chuckle. I swear that the dog used to laugh! Most people thought he was bearing his teeth, but his tail would wag and he'd make a really strange gurgling sound when he'd get around people. He was an extremely happy dog.

I had a german shep/chow mix for years. He loved chasing the water out of the hose and when he made me laugh, he would smile ear to ear. Then he'd do it more until I laughed again. Some days he would wake up before me and push his nose into my face to wake me up. If I reacted as though I were grossed out by it, he would smile ear to ear and begin dancing around the room.

From my experience, I'd say dogs do have a sense of humor.

I do not have a dog that laughs, but I certainly have a LARGE rotty who smiles from ear to ear when he gets a tummy rub. It is the cutest thing--and there is no question that it is a smile, because it only happens with tummy rubs.

My pit bull will "smile" at me when I come home. He then jumps up (straight up) and licks my face - then smiles some more.

His "smile" he wrinkles his nose just enough to barely, barely, barely show his front teeth - Looks almost human.

And he'll give a big-broad grin when he plays "catch" with a Frisbee.

It was funny. Needless to say my brother has never been back.
