I have an open/under bite and I am expecting to have jaw surgery sometime before the summer is up. Susposedly, they're going to be doing everything from the inside, so I'll have no scaring on the outside. To be completely honest I'm dreading it and completely petrified. I've never had any kind of major surgery before. I have high expectations with my results. Anybody here had a similar procedure done? I don't want you to scare me I just wanna know like, how do you eat and how long does the jaw have to be wired shut and stuff like that. Is there also anyway I can take something to keep me calm before I go into surgery? I have a consultation coming up soon and would also like ideas on questions to ask. Everything I will ask him but would like different opinions.

Nevada Poker is beyond paranoid about this. This operation IS medically necessary because it affects your chewing. Not being able to chew adequately will lead to later health issues. Not only that, but TMJ pain and uneven tooth wear are real problems that can be headed off with this surgery. The docs involved don't do these operations to "make money"; they do them to improve a patient's quality of life.
Eating is rather simple; there are complete nutrition products, like Ensure or Boost. The recommended intake is 6 cans per day for women and eight cans per day for men. You will need to use a straw for about 5 or 6 weeks.
Ask the surgeon about what results he/she expects, the eating /jaw wiring issue, brushing your teeth, and something for your anxiety. Ask also about post-operative pain management.
Good luck! I've seen many patients who've had really good results from this operation.

Never do Elective Surgery without 3 Doctor Opinions. This is the common rule of thumb.
Do you have to have this surgery or will something else help you?
What are all your options?
Have you done your research first?

This is big time surgery and I would never have anything done like this unless it was absolutely necessary for a normal life. There are always risks with surgery. And you need to check out your doctor top to bottom. Learn everything about him and his past.
There are so many doctors now with malpractise suits that last for 3-10 years. If they get too many or a bad reputation in one town or state they move to another and open practise. How do you know? Check him out real well on the internet, ask nurses at the local hospital, use a blog, what ever you can to make a good decision. And get the opinion of 3 doctors. You may find each one has a different diagnosis.

Some doctors rush to surgery. This is how they make money. The most money is made in the medical field by doing surgeries so why not offer only that option to a patient?

My sister in law had her jaw broken and wired shut. It was awful. She could only eat through a straw, was hungry all the time, had to drink high calorie high sugar shakes, and she still lost weight and muscle. The muscle is hard to get back (you are not getting enough protein so add a milkshake of WHEY twice a day). And if you can imagine not being able to open your mouth to sneeze, cough, lick your lips, or anything else for many weeks. It is pure hell from what I heard.

Please check out all your options. Braces can cure under or over bites. And if this is all that is wrong with your jaw, many people live with this just fine. It can cause TMJ but that is not too bad. I have TMJ and it flares only under stress.

Good Luck

Jaw surgery is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her dental implants and lasik surgery in India by a company called Indian Health Guru Consultants. The Price for dental and lasik surgery is very less in India. She paid 25% of the price she was quoted in America.

Indian Health Guru Consultants is very famous in India They arrange Dental surgery, jaw surgery, lasik eye surgery, Dental Implants etc for foreign patients in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines- about their patient stories.
They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as dental and eye surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.
