It's part of a common myth. Look for a book called "The Hero: A Study in Tradition, Myth and Drama" by Lord Raglan. He describes the common elements of this myth. The more elements a story has, the less likely the person in the story is real. The Lion King, Harry Potter, Luke Skywalker (from Star Wars), Hercules, Romulus, Robin Hood, Oedipus, King Arthur, Moses, Jesus, etc...

(6)An attempt is made to kill him at birth(often by father or father-figure) but
(7)He is spirited away and
(8)Raised by foster parents in a far country.

The only prophet I know that was born of a virgin was Jesus. But then, I don't know much about any other religion besides Christianity.

NO prophets are born of a virgin. With respect to Christianity, the word "virgin" is a mis-translation of a Greek word meaning unmarried woman.

The fiction writers of the day were quite fascinated with virgins. After telling all the stories about killing, threats, and violence, it must have been a nice respite to write about virgins for a while.

The only "miraculous" births in the Torah/Tanach (Christian OT) are births to mothers of advanced age.
The belief that God would become human is the ultimate heresy.

I think only Jesus was. But I still find it hard to believe that they had artificial insemination back then. That's the only way you can be pregnant and still be a virgin...

There are CLAIMS, but only ONE truly was and that was JESUS of Nazareth, born to the virgin Mary who was espoused to Joseph. He was Jesus, the Christ; the only begotten son of God as was testfied to in the Holy Bible. His claims are true because He is the only man, filled with the Holy Spirit who could do the miracles He did and lived without sin and arose from the dead after going into the 'underworld' and stripping satan of all his power and authority from over anyone who accepts and confesses to others Jesus as Lord, and now sits at the right-hand of power again in heaven. He transfered that power and authority to use His name to all who will receive His Lordship.
There is no "other" name or Lord that has any power to present you to the God of Heaven and Earth.., none other who can give you everlasting life, and no healing or redemption in any other name! It is the only name that enrages the heathen, that stops the devil and his plots and schemes, that elavates all humankind, that brings with it health, peace and joy in the spirit of men and women. He is the REDEEMER of the world!
He was born of a woman, but His life is from his father GOD, and ONLY the BLOOD OF JESUS can SAVE man from sin by eradicating it forever! He WAS the perfect, sinless and ONLY sacrifice to be offered for sin that God ever approved and He was SATISFIED that the sin-debt of mankind had been paid! He and His sacrificial offering of Himself was prophecied and enacted in the offering of Isaac by Abraham.., when God stopped Him and the angel said, "God will offer HIMSELF a sacrifice". That was the prophetic statement of Jesus, God's son on the cross of Calvary. Have you ever watched the Passion of the Christ movie by Mel Gibson? Will/Can you?
The other claims have no reason or basis or truth in them.., they are all lying copies of the Saviors birth, God's "master plan" for redemption of His creation..., and ''IT IS FINISHED''.
Father God and Jesus the Christ did not fulfill this plan to give us a set of rules and teachings to live by, nor do they expect us to do anything in and of ourselves except to RECEIVE Jesus AS our Lord and Savior.., with gratitude for the sacrifice on our behalf and to love our fellowman/neighbor as ourself and enough to tell them the true story of how much Jehovah God loves us all and how He expressed it in Jesus toward us. Just accept it.
