No, it is clams that are dangerous to eat if they have not opened during cooking, not pistachios. I have pried closed ones open many a time with no ill effect.

It is an urban myth. There is nothing wrong with pistachios that dont open on their own accord.

nooooooooooooooooo
i love them that way, specially when they are completely fresh, with that fresh red skin on them. the taste great.
and you know iranians eat pistachio in both of these two ways. it tastes great when its still fresh.
and if it's not fresh , but has not opened naturally , there is no prblem, you can break the layer and enjoy the taste!!!!!!!

They are not poisonous but can cause you problems. You could break a tooth trying to crack them. Throw them away.

I believe it is the inside of the shell of the pistachio that is poisonous.

Sometimes, pistachio shells don’t open on their own. Often, this is caused by immature kernels that don’t grow properly. Such nuts should usually be discarded.
