I just purchased a 2007 KIA Rhondo and it has side curtain airbags...when my daughter starts facing forward in her britax car seat should she be placed in the middle seat or behind the passenger seat?

The britax xar seat is so big it might not fit and it stops me from being able to put the seat down to get to the last row of my car.

The middle seat is always the best place for the car seat, wether there are side air bags or not. Your vehicle manual should specifically go over where NOT to place a car seat. I would stick with the middle if the car seat will fit. Not all car seats fit the middle seat, so you have to be careful. I was taught in Child Safety Seat class that the middle seat is first option and behind driver is second option because a driver of a vehicle will tend to shield that side when faced with a collision. (i.e. turn the car to the left if a vehicle is coming at you head on).

for certain, the child should be in the middle of the back seat. Statistacally, this is the safest place to be in any accident. In addition, those side airbags are great, but not for a small child. I've investigated a lot of crashes and as a result, when young, my kids were always in the middle.
Good luck.

Personally, I would place the child in the middle. Once I was in a car accident in which I was hit so hard that my seat broke and I was laying on the back seat. Had a child been in the seat, they may have been seriously injured. Also, in case of a side impact, it is better for the child to be in the middle away from the impact area.
Also, you can call the police to come to your home to make sure your child's seat is place properly in your car. Make sure to use the non emergency number which is in the front of the phone book.

Middle is always best. Check with you car manual to verify that you can have a carseat there. Surprisingly, some cars do not allow you to have a carseat in the middle!

The side curtain airbag is really tricky with carseats. Some only come down so far...where it will not affect the carseat or the child in it, some cover the entire window.

Again, check your car manual. It will tell you where the safest locations in your vehicle are for carseats!

Another great idea is to contact a local Child passenger safety technician in your area http://www.seatcheck.org and have them check out your install. They will also help you out in your situation! Good luck!
