My dog was recently in a kennel for 3 days. When she came back she had diahrea for 4 days and now we've got that under control. She's been coughing some lately and she keeps breathing in and out very heavy like she's dry heaving. It just seems to be like a dry cough with breathing trouble. I am really short on money and don't want to take her to the vet for something that will go away on it's own. Is this something that has to be dealt with at the vet?

She was given the kennel cough shot months in advance before going in. She didn't show any signs until over a week since she's been home.

It sounds like kennel cough and possibly guiardia (diarrhea). I would report the kennel to the humane society for inspection. Kennel cough will usually go away on it's own. Worm her with fenbendazole to help with the parasites.

Sound like kennel cough. Did she have a kennel cough vaccination before she was taken into the kennel? I do not know of any place that does accept dog without it. It can often be very hard to control or get rid of so meds may be needed. Good luck and I hope she is feeling better soon.

Sounds like it may be kennel cough. Had she been vaccinated for kennel cough? Really doesn't matter if she was, as there are different strains that the vaccine does not cover. As long as there is no snot coming out of the nose and she is still behaving normally, it will go away on its own. If the coughing is keeping you up at night you can give robitussin, 1 teaspoon, about an hour before bed. It will take about a week to clear up on its own. But, if she starts acting different, loss of appetite, runny nose, lethargic, get her to the vet.

I researched KC a couple months ago and from what I found antibiotics probably will not help it anyways because there is a viral form and a bacterial form and antibiotics is ineffective against one of the forms.

Even if she was vaccinated for Kennel Cough, how long ago was it done? The vaccine is only good for about 6 months. If done within 2 wks of boarding, then it wasn't fully effective yet.
Dry heaves and coughing sound like Kennel Cough. I don't believe diarrhea fits in with that. Although, if her feed was changed at the kennel, that would account for it.

There are over 130 strains of kennel cough viruses. You can only vaccinate against about 4 of them. Your dog probably has a strain of kennel cough. Have a vet look her over to be certain. Usually kennel cough resolves itself in a few weeks.

Call your vet and tell them what you are asking on here and let them tell you if you need to bring the dog in or not. You can ask them how much the charge will be and see if you can't make payments if you can't afford to pay in full. Breathing problems are truly nothing to screw around with and the fact that she had diarrhea for 4 days, there's also a good chance that she could be dehydrated with can become an emergency really quickly. If you nip it in the bud now it will save the dog discomfort and you a lot of money (emergency vet care can be very expensive).

Call the vet now.

PLEASE call your vet and tell him/her what's going on with your dog. This is not something you want to let go on. It needs to be addressed now! Was your dog immunized for kennel cough? All the kennels I know require it before boarding a dog, but that's what it sounds like. Please don't risk your dog's life and health. See a vet!

Was she immunized for kennel cough before she went to the kennel? If not, why did the kennel accept her? I think your best bet would be the vet. Do you want to risk it getting worse before it "goes away on its own"??
