Call your vet and take your cat in as soon as you get it. Your vet can check him/her out, make sure your kitty is healthy, and give the required vaccinations. It's good to establish a relationship with a vet early on.

It's been a while since Nova was a kitten but I know she needed the following shots when she was little (the vet will tell you the exact ages)

1st and 2nd Distemper
Rabies
Feline Leukemia

Those are the most needed, there are a few others you can get as a precaution to prevent illness if she is around other cats and/or will be outside.

8 weeks is a good age for a first checkup, they can check her over thoroughly, check for worms, etc.

It would depend where you are getting the kitten from. If you are getting him/her from a shelter, then they should have given the kitten their first set of vaccinations.

Vaccinations are given in a series meaning you go in, get the FVRCP vaccination (which covers Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis Calicivirus And Panleukopenia). About three weeks later you go in for another of the same, then the last one three weeks from that. At that time you will get a rabies vaccination that will need a booster in 6 months time, after that yearly rabies vaccinations.

Be sure to bring a stool sample of the kitten in so that they can check for parasites. If the kitten has worms they will give deworming medication.

6 months of age he or she can be neutered or spayed.

Good luck with the kitten.

The kitten should have a vet checkup as soon as it comes home to check for worms and other parasites. When you go to this appointment know what shots if any the kitten has already had and the vet will put you on a schedule for getting the remaining shots administered.
