Whenever he's throwing a hissy fit, just watch him and don't respond. Tell him this once: When you start acting like a big boy, I'll pay attention to you. After that, just watch him act wild and foolish. When he realizes that it's not working, he'll stop.

ignore him. Lots of times, kids act up for attention (sadly sometimes it's the only way kids get attention), so if you don't pay attention to him when he has a tantrum and just continue a conversation with someone or watching TV,etc, eventually he will get bored and give up. If that doesn't work, you may have to resort to "Time out", taking away his favorite toy, keeping him from watching his favorite cartoon, or even light spanking (as a last resort). But whichever you try, just be sure to counter the negative reinforcement with the positive reinforcement of giving him more attention when he's good and rewarding him when he does good things. Otherwise, he could get set in believing that he has to do bad things to be noticed, which could have consequences later in life.

He needs a routine, and you need to follow through with the discipline - whether it be a 'time out chair' or whatever.
It will be hard for the first few days, but soon he'll learn who's the boss and that his behavior isn't acceptable.
Another thing you may want to do is limit the sugar in his diet - no fast food, no soda, no candy...and limit tv time - he might not be getting enough play time outside and his pent up energy is emerging as anger...keep him preoccupied.

spank him. he thinks he has you under his control. my parents would make me stand facing the wall for hours. they also spanked me when i was bad. if you ground him, he will be mad and will be likely to repeat the offence again. so take something he really enjoys away. no tv. no toys, make him miserable. you learn alot when your bored. make sure he understands why he was wrong by having him explaining it to you after his punishment is over. sounds mean? you bet. but if you dog craps on the carpet don't you hit him on the nose? Sometimes you have to learn the hardway. he'll see that he doesn't like it so he'll stop. tell me that didn't work on you as a child, i haven't been to jail. I am afraid to get in trouble. it made me work hard and do things right. i know where i don't want to go.

I remember when I had big temper, my mother would beat the crap out of me. It's effective but will have later consequences.

Why not take the boy to a professional counselor who can treat his temper?

Tell him you are not going to listen to him or even look at him when he acts like that. Then put him in his room/the corner/etc but away from people until the tantrum/temper passes.
