If you enlist into the Navy as an Undesignated Seaman as part of the Seaman Apprenticeship Program you will go into the fleet as a Seaman Recruit. That's it. You will not have a specific job at all. You MAY be able to select something when you get to boot camp when you go to the Classifications office during week 3, but there are NO GUARANTEES you will get MA or any other rating. I am guessing from experience that you had a fairly low ASVAB score and when you went to MEPS either you had zero choices for a job or you did not like the other jobs besides seaman apprentice that they offered you. In order to be an MA in the first place you need to have a pretty decent ASVAB score, plus you have to have a valid drivers license and zero drug use or any other criminal behavior prior to coming into the Navy. You also cannot be color blind in anyway. Do you meet ALL of those requirements, because if not MA is out of the question for you. If you want a job of any kind you need to go back to MEPS and pick something before you leave for boot camp. Tell your recruiter you want to go bacl to MEPS to talk to a Navy Classifer. When you are at MEPS you will have way better odds mof getting a job you want. At boot camp you have to find a job that will have a seat in the school you will need to go to that starts the week after you graduate from boot camp. They will not pay to keep you on hold for for school so your choices for a new jon selection while you are in boot camp are very slim. If you go into the fleet as a Seaman you lose years off your of time that you can be advanced to the next paygrade. Again, IF you have a low ASVAB score once you get to the fleet your choices for a job are not going to be any better than they are right now. Also, you will not get too many people supporting your efforts to pick a job and then go to "A" school. I know it sounds crappy but people are going to use you as free labor to do any kind of job they don't want to do. They are going to try to keep you as a Seaman as long as possible. SO, unless your goal is to become a Boatswains Mate in the Navy DO not leave for boot camp without a job rating. You may need to study for the ASVAB and retake the test to try to get a better score so you can pick from more jobs,

If we are talking about the same thing, you are talking about entering the fleet "undesignated." This means that after a very short "A-school" in great lakes, you'll go to the fleet as the Navy's equivalent of an intern. You'll do one deployment usually, then decide what rate to 'strike' for based on that experience. If it requires an A-school, like Hospital Corpsman, you'll go back to Great Lakes and get trained in that rate. It's a great idea for those who want to learn about the Navy before making a decision about what to do in it. The downside is that it's a lot of work, and scut work at that. But hey, that's what internships are: pay in scut for valuable training and experience.

if you want MA, then get it in writing BEFORE you ship out. you may NOT change ratings in Bootcamp unless you are found to be otherwise DQs for the rating you do have. and once you hit the Fleet you must be in your current job for at least a year(and sometimes 2) before you can cross rate
DO NOT GO IN UNDESIGNATED. y u will end up swabbing decks in the Fleet, and you will have a hard time striking for a rating at first.
if you do not qualify for MA due to line scores or other issues, such as medical or moral waivers, then find something else that you would like to do.

Here's a hint. Have the MAA A-School promised to you in writing before you sign anything.
Otherwise, you run the very real risk of being stuck in a rating you didn't want.

The military has always had 'pick your job' programs. The problem is they do not guarantee anything unless its in writing. You can pick your job and they may come back and say, sorry that job is full with a waiting list.
Also Master- at- Arms is ranked E-4 and higher.

going undes is really, really, really, a bad idea!
unless you like doing stupid work and working long, long, hours.
pick your rate, go for MA, if you want.
Infact, they are doing away with the undes program.
