No.
The British police no longer carry out policing duties. They have become a rapid response organisation.
The sad thing is that they are losing the support of the middle class / chattering classes. Without public support, a police force cannot operate.
Talking of George Orwell, Eric Blair was a serving police officer. He saw what could happen when a police force becomes an occupying force.
He really knew what he was talking about in 1984.
We are almost there. We have a 1984 type police force.

Last time i looked a part of the British Public are the British Police...
However it could easily be turned about . Are the British Public in tune with British Law? - NO
The police's job is to enforce law which they do. The public respect and remain in the boundaries of the law.. Which they dont..

I think the majority of British Police Officers are in tune with the British public. Unfortunately the government are most definitely not. If they were then you could expect us to be able to provide better service than what we are currently able to give.

I don't think the British public are 'in tune' with the police. This forum is full of people who think they have the answers to all policing problems without ever having actually having been involved for any length of time with policing.
Perhaps if some of the non-police functions were done by the people who were actually supposed to deal with them such as social workers, psychiatric staff, councils, private security staff et al, the police could actually then get on with policing ie keeping the peace and preventing and detecting crime. The government tend to use police to try to clear up all their failures (there have been 3,000 new criminal offences created in the last 10 years) as opposed to dealing with the root causes of the problem.
One simple solution would be that every person who drafts a law is fined £1,000 every time there is a stated case allowed. Perhaps laws might be better thought through then.

The British police as individuals are very much in tune with the British public because they are part of the British public. I certainly am, I am just another working bloke, living in a two up two down terraced house driving a 13 year old car. I have the same concerns and worries as everyone else.
Now if you are referring to the British police with respect to the failings of "the system" then I am probably more aware of it's failings being on the inside on a daily basis than many others. It's problems are not of my creation, yet I get it in the neck for them despite bending over backwards to try and make it work.
When there are only four police officers on duty and 36 incidents to respond to, what do you think happens? Someone ends up waiting a long time and when the officer who has been running around like a headless chicken finally gets to someone who has been waiting all they get is ear ache from someone who hasn't got the slightest idea of what is really going on. Whoopee not in tune!

I think Mr Plod has his hands well and truly tied behind his back.
The average cop knows exactly who the usual culprits are.
They always complain about too much paperwork, targets, quotas and all this interfering shite that prevents them from getting out on the beat and nicking crims.
Problem is the PC-apologist governments and the hierarchy don't like the sad fact that most of the crims are coloured or ethnics.

No not at all, I think that they have improved some since the 70s if called that can be called complimentary but not much. The police are unsympathetic with minorities. Institutionalised Racism is not only a fact but a fact of life and the people know that no matter how much spin and pointless directives implemented by the police they are as racist now as they were 10 or 20 years ago.
In the UK the prisons are filled with minorities because minorities are treated differently you are more at risk if you are a minority.
No they are not in tune with the British people

the police are sometimes members of the public as well, they work with the tools they were given. if the law is an *** then what chance have they got trying to enforce it. they're just going to work and doing their job like everyone else, just be glad that some people are prepared to do that job for members of the public and then put up with the same members of the public giving them sh1t about it.
