Narcissus was a youth of great beauty in Greek Mythology. According to the legend, one of the nymphs fell deeply in love with him, but was unable to get his attention. She eventually wasted away such that even her bones vanished, and all that was left was her voice. Her name was Echo.
Other nymphs also sought his love, but were also unsuccessful. One of them asked the gods to curse him to knowing what it is to be unable to obtain the object of his own love. He then fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Unable to take his gaze from his own reflection, there he died.
