One of my house mates has a kitten, and made the mistake of leaving a candle burning while he fell asleep (Yes *I* know silly that was, but he said that he had just fallen asleep, and that's why the candle was still burning). In any case, his 9 week old kitten managed to knock the candle down and get himself absolutely Coated in the melted candle wax.

My house mate came and woke me up at 7am, when this happened, and I checked the kitten out. He's in no pain, no sign burns, not in shock, pulse seems normal... However, his fur is coated in wax. The candle was one of those big jar, scented candles, so it was semi-soft wax, not the hard wax.

I've told him to try using ice cubes to harden the wax up, then break it off; to try the hairdryer set on warm, with a cloth on the kitten to absorb the wax; to try warm as possible water; and also to try a petroleum based product such as mineral oil/baby oil, to try to dissolve at least some components of the wax.

Any other suggestions?

I would try to remove as much as possible by hand and using warm water to dissolve the wax. Then carefully cut the fur on what's left.

"silly' isn't exactly the word I would use to describe your roomate's lack of caution with a new kitten running around..

try a product called "goo-gone"
put the kitten in warm bath and rub the goo-gone on the fur being careful not to get in the eyes/mouth/ears/nose.....
it will disintegrate the wax, but it's citrus-based so have your silly roommate be careful, or better yet, you do it.

Try warm water, not hot to loosen the wax. The little guy will appreciate the wax getting off but not the water. You may have to fill a sink and place him in it. Good luck.

Bring the kitten to a groomer and let them deal with the mess. It is going to be no easy feat to get that stuff off. Be careful with the blow dryer that could get hot for the kitten.

if it was a SOY candle - that wax is water soluable so you can just wash it off with water..

I would just cut the fur off very carefully - it will grow back.

I'd get a groomer to shave the cat. I know that sounds sad, but it will probably be the quickest, easiest, least traumatic thing for the cat, and you.
