I suppose I'm going to sound just awful, but after 23 years of being a single mother raising kids while living hand-to-mouth, if given the choice now I'd go for the money.

I don't care for material things, they mean nothing. I think of the advantages I could give my kids if we had a better income and it saddens me.

College is coming up and I have nothing saved. My kids will go on loans and grants because they are eligible and they want to go, but they'll work their way through and it will be difficult for them.

My 15 year-old is working like a fool taking care of people's yards to save money for a car, which is something we don't even have. We walk everywhere or we just don't go.

I've done well with my kids, they're responsible, respectable boys. In that respect money isn't everything. But oh to be able to send them to school, or take them on a vacation. Definitely the money this time.

Well right now I am a stay at home mom. No money in that LOL But I love what I do and I think its worth it in the long run. But I am finishing up my psych degrees so that when my twins hit kindergarden I can go back to work. The upside is I will love what I do then as well AND will make lots of money. If you can have it both ways, then go go for it.

I've actually done both.
They have their pluses and minuses.. as you've said, family is a consideration. Doing what I loved but working for a non-profit with low pay was preferable.. I was happier and my family was happier.. the high paying job I hated made me miserable so my family was miserable and worried about me

Thankfully, I have the best of both worlds now.

That is the dilemma I currently find myself in. It is far better to do what you love. My current job pays well but is so boring what i want to do requires 7 more years of schooling and requires me to not work for 5 of those years.

I have opted to pursue what I love.

I made the choice and am a stay at home Mom. The pay stinks, but the benefits are endless. I love being with my children!
Peace be with you.

If I had a family to consider I would suck it up and work the job with more money unless it turned me into a total bit@# and affected my family

I have to go with Red Queen. I would take the money in a heartbeat. I would be happier if life was easier.

I made that choice, I do what I love, and it doesn't pay as well, but it pays enough to get by, and I am happy, so my family is happy.

I will have to default to the something I love and does not pay well. I do that now. But, there is only me and my wife, and neither of us can have kids.
