sit-ups are actually not a very good exercise.
Try crunches. They are much more effective

You should get one of those stability balls to work out with, I use mine everyday.. and I love it! You can do so many different exercises with it, and almost all you have to use your stomach muscles. That and Pilate's, its all about your engaging your core muscles. Good luck. Oh and crunches are much better than actual sit ups.

sit ups only build muscle - they do not burn any fat and will make your belly look bigger since there is gona be more muscle underneath the layer of fat.
the only fat burning exercise is cardio - burns fat all over your body - we cant spot reduce body fat. do it 4-6 times a week for 30-50min and combine with light weight training 2-3days a week.

I have heard that sit ups only build muscle under the fat. I don't know. I have also read that to lose belly fat you need to work with weights.
