You should give wherever you feel comfortable giving. A lot of people here have problems with giving to churches because they're thinking of TV evangelists it seems. Where I live, there are a lot of small churches. When we tithe, our money goes to keep the church running (electric bill, etc), fund missionaries, fund local charity efforts and provides a small paycheck to the pastor who generally works a second job. That's why local churches collect money. If you give to that fine, but if you choose to give your money elsewhere that's ok too. God looks at where your heart is in the giving. He knows where your intent is, and if the person using your money uses it incorrectly, God still knows you meant well and you will be blessed for it.

I rather give it to an orphanage than the church. It doesn't matter where you give it. It is up to you! Belief in god that you are not going to be blessed if you don't give it to the church it is brainwashing and a lie. Read your bible if you are a christian. No where in the bible does it say, give to the church. It says that the apostle paul went around and collected money on a week day and gave it to the poor..Did he get blessed for doing that? Yes he did! He followed the steps of what he was taught. There are 3 tithes and it is all made to assist you to manage your currency and not make you poor or stressed out to meet that commitment...get down and read your bible. Look with your own eyes and make reasoning a part of it. You can only do yourself good if you have more..Look after your community and don't allow to fear for what is good from your heart.

Oh no..........you are going straight to hell for that one. That is God's money and it goes into his checking account so that he can buy more churches and have more gold and art and basically just so that he can have more stuff. The orphans do not need anything, since the poor shall inherit the earth and also it is part of God's plan for them (and how dare we second guess his plan) to be poor and without and having to fend for themselves, while God needs his money. That is his money and he will destroy the world if he does not get his money.
LMAO, I hope that you did not believe in any of that crap. Just the usual double talking of the church in order to continue to get your money. The church leaders know exactly what it is that they are doing, and that is making money using an entity (either real or fake - it is not relevant) that nobody has seen, can see, or will see. So that makes it so much better, because you can never ask "God" what he needs the money for, and they can make up reasons to give to them.
Continue giving money to the orphanages and ignore the church. The church is a huge money grab, using an imaginary being to make money.

during the OT times when people tithed, it was not coins, but fruits of their labor, in product, be it flesh from herds or grains from their crops

in the NT we were commanded to bring our tithes to the "storehouse"

Most of us today do not produce food, we earn a wage, paid as money........
One of the duties of the chuch is to provide for the poor........
We are also taught that God loves a cheerful giver.....

I have a big problem with "mega-churches" who like to show their wealth........if offends me

In essence, I agree that it is more important to feed and clothe the poor and homeless than to recarpet the fellowship hall.

Also, for those of us who do regualary worship in a church, temple, etc....the light bill still has to be paid. We definately need to rethink our priorities both inside and outside the church.

God does not need our money, the poor and homeless do.

I'm sure plenty of others are giving to the church weekly. I'm not so sure that there are a large number of people giving to the orphanages. I think God would definitely approve.
God Bless You.

Its always better to give direct to the needy than to a charity. Many charities have a bad record of taking a large percentage for running costs, including fat salaries for people in management. My understanding is that charities run by the Church have a much better record at getting the donations to the needy.

Tithes belong to the Lord. Now if you want to give above what you give on tithes to a orphanage then give that.

Its up to you to decide what to do with your money. Do what feels right to you. You might try giving to the orphanage for a short time to see how it feels.

YES! It's smarter too. That way, you know EXACTLY where your money is going and more importantly, you're not wasting it on the building of yet another useless religious building. Of course, there are no "orphanages" left in the U.S., but I think we all get the point.
