Bringing guitar on airplane?
Beginning of July I am flying from Maryland to Indiana and I have to bring my Fender strat (an electric guitar) with me. Theres no way I'm checking it through with all the other luggage and I am not shipping it and I am not going to buy one of those $300 flight cases. The only thing I can think of is for me to bring it with me actually on the plane and put it in the overhead OR put it where people hang garments and such.
So, question is... would they let me keep it in the overhead and would it fit?? Or would they let me keep in the closet? I'm not talking about a huge dreadnought. But this is a $1500 Ltd. Edition Fender Strat that belongs to my uncle, he's letting me borrow, so it has GOT to stay with me and stay in the best care possible! Thanks and God bless,

They should let you keep it with you, but as for fitting in the overhead, you need to check with the airline to find out the size of the overhead storage, etc. If the flight is fully booked, they may not have room up there, even if it did fit. You might want to get to the counter ahead of time and talk to a steward/stewardess about your special needs and see if they can accommodate them. Most of the time they are very helpful and will work with you to find a good solution.

I would suggest calling the airline about that. My brother always brings a guitar with him when he travels. There have been time's he's been able to bring it on the plane as a carry-on (it fits in the overhead bins of larger planes). Other times he's had no choice but to check it. Calling the airline directly will be the best way to know without guessing and hoping for the best.

I did that once. And I'll never do it again. I was allowed to check my guitar (in flight case) with my bags without extra costs. Flying from Amsterdam to Austin. That went fine. But when I wanted to go from Austin to Newark, the lady informed me that if I wanted my guitar on the plane with me, that would cost me an extra $75. I wasn't about to leave my guitar behind so I paid the extra fee. Would have been nice to know this in advance. I vowed never to bring my guitar with me again. But I've seen people with bigger things than guitar cases boarding airplanes. So I still don't understand why I had to pay extra to bring my little guitar with me.

The only place my guitar will rest on a plane is between my legs. I will never put it in an overhead. My computer goes under the seat

I live in Nashville and have seen hundreds bring guitars on the planes coming in and out. yes they will let you put them in the overhead and some will let you put them in the closet up front. make SURE you either sit in first class or get a seat where you can board first to put it in the overhead.

Because you are in a confined space with others, the airline determines what musical instruments can be in "passenger". Check and see. Do you remember, in the movie, "Airplane"?

I am not sure if they will let you do that or not, I am pretty sure it wont fit in the overhead. You could contact the TSA I'm sure they will have a direct answer for you.

I think you'll either have to check it in as luggage, or pay for a seat.
