I have just moved into a new home and am trying to make it pretty without spending fortune as im on unpaid maternity leave at the mo. The kitchen walls are really bad and really need replastering but i cant afford it just now. Is there anything else i could do? i tried white paint , and am thinking of textured paint but it would need to be really textured , thought bought tiling but is huge kitchen and also its a really old house and there is pipework running everywhere. Is there anything i haven't thought of that i could try?

I had a similar situation. I did the best I could with painting. I would try stucco maybe? I'm not quite sure how to do it, but Lowes is really good with helping. Maybe you could ask someone there too in addition to help here.

As much as I hate the place, Home Depot has sheets of 8ftx4ft laminate that gives the appearance of stainless steel, or white tile or faux granite, etc. it goes up with a little construction adhesive, and some nails in an inconspicuous location. another option, mix some latex paint with drywall mud until you have a nice spreadable consistancy. take a trowel and just start smearing it in an even pattern along the walls. It may take some practice to get a nice looking finish, but if you pay attention, you can see just how the pros do it...overlapping arches is common, or swirls, remember, you are not looking for a smooth plaster look here. if you have no luck with that, thin it out a bit more and use a very bushy roller to get a "popcorn" look. you shouldn't need spend more than 50-100 bucks to get it looking good. Remember, if there is greease on the walls, the paint will not adhere correctly, and you may need to do some scraping/priming.

I used textured paper on mine.It coverd the humps and bumbs that my husband left while trying to plaster it was put on temporary like you had just moved in and not alot to spend. It has been on now 5 year.and I have changed the colour on it a few times.
good luck but get some one to help you.being on maternity leave you should not do it all your self. The pipe work you can purchase plastic covers that just clip on to cover unsightly pipe work.

You should go to Lowe's and talk to someone. You could use the texture paint rollers, or sponges to make it a different look. Maybe try a different color than white.

First of all you will need help from someone who knows what they are doing, maybe a friend or husband.
