Both will help. Communication will help pronunciation by letting you hear how words are pronounced and the text that they need to be used.

Both can't hurt but I would say that communication is the best way to improve your english. If you concentrate on just reading, then you aren't going to relate to people that well. Being in contact and communicating with others on a regular basis will help you to understand dialogue that you most likely will not find in your books.

First of all, you should try to learn by heart as many words as you can. In my opinion, you should learn one word per day. Then, you try to use them as much as you are able to do. But, you should push yourself into difficulties. You can learn English in your friends' blog, newspaper, TV and on the way to school. So, you can have lots of vocabulary and try to communicate as you come across native English.
Secondly, you take time to listen to the tape, news, and watch English films which include subtitle.
Finally, you read English novels, fictions and funny stories to master your writing.

When trying to learn Spanish, I could read all day long, but nothing was a substitute for communication. My vote is practice by speaking with people.

Ready is a good way to learn new words and their meanings and spelling but if you really want to improve it you should speak it as much as you can.
My mother has tried learning English thru watching tv or reading it but that is as far as she got, she was able to understand it but her pronunciation is horrible because she is scared of speaking it because she sounds funny.
So get over the fear of sounding funny ans speak it as much as you can because with use of the language and time you'll get more fluent.

You've got to strike a balance between both. Conversation will improve your spoken communication skills and reading will impove your comprehension and vocabulary.

Listen to news casters. They invariably speak correctly. Repeat everything they say - and listen to the differences between how they phrase things and how you would have phrased it. Chances are, they're correct.
www.Dictionary.com will provide you with a "Word-a-Day" which will help to increase your vocabulary.
Reading will help - particularly news magazines like Time, Newsweek, etc. Read them aloud so you can hear it in your ears, not just in your head.
Good luck.
