I work 40 hours a week so I'm gone for the first 8 hours of every day. The puppy either can't or won't hold it that long so any time I leave it in its kennel he pees in it and on himself. What should I do with him while I am gone?

Get the puppy into rescue. You'll never housebreak it or socialize it properly working that amount of time. You shouldn't have a puppy. They can hold it 3 hours tops.

The best thing you can do for this puppy is to find it a good home ..someone that can spend time with the poor thing. No one should put a dog in a crate for 8 hours. My God why have a dog if you have to crate it for 8 hours. If not then find your puppy a doggy day care, but don't be leaving this poor baby in a crate.. How would you like being in a crate for 8 hours. Put yourself in a small room, with out access to a bathroom for 8 hours. Nothing to do , no one around..Just sit there for 8 hours in a chair. What would you do.
If you want to keep your dog , then find it a doggy day care or find someone that would be willing to watch your dog for you.

I have 8 dogs and they were never in a crate so I know it can be done and yes I work.

Once a dog has peed in his crate it is of no use to you. First of all its damaginf to the dog phycologically. By nature they dont go in their den, if he pees its because he cant hold it. My best advice would be to gate the puppy in a certain area ( i always suggest kitchen) and put the puppy pads down. The food and water on one side of the kitchen, pads at the other (dogs wont pee or poop near their food) This will stop the accidents in his crate, and give the dog a proper place to go. When the puppy gets older you can try to present the crate to him again, by 6 months most dogs are okay holding it for about 8 hours ( as long as its not a tiny breed)

You can even look into dog walkers which are reletivly inexpensive, if you compare what you will spend on puppy pads to them.

good luck, and remember never scold the puppy, in the end its not his fault

you need to hire a dog sitter to let the puppy out in the middle of the day. You are going to end up with a 'dirty dog'... one that does not care about being clean. This is going to lead to great issues in the house breaking area.

Another option is doggy daycare, but i only recommend that to for dogs that have been to puppy kindergarten and are well socialized.

You have to find a way to get the poor puppy out while you are gone.

Also, at this age, the puppy needs interaction... eight hours on his own is too long.

The rule is one hour per a month of age plus one. So if your puppy is 8 weeks old, you need to make sure he goes out every 3 hours... even in the middle of the night. If he is 10 weeks old, you might can bump it up to 4 hours. At five months, anything past 6 hours is almost cruel. Imagine if you had to wait eight hours to go to the bathroom... not cool.

Get a friend or a trustworthy neighbour to help you or hire a liscenced and bonded pet walker/ sitter. Your vet may be able to recommend one.

How old is the puppy? Most young pups are not able to hold it for that long and end up having accidents.

Is there anyone you could have check on him while you are gone? My husband stops at our home on his lunch break everyday to let our dogs out for about 20 mins, so they are not alone for a full 8-9 hours. Maybe if you have a neighbor or friend nearby, you could pay them a small fee each week to just let him out for a little bit. It might help him.

If not, it the crate is large enough, could you put a puppy pad at one end, so as to keep to mess at one end, and he could stay dry at the other end? Just a thought.

But, depending on his age, it might take a few months for his bladder to grow and he might not have any problems when he is older. Good luck!

It's not really fair to crate a puppy or any animal for that length of time. If your working then pehaps it's not the right time for you have a dog. Imagine how you might feel if you were stuck in a crate, on your own, for 8 hours every day!

It's tough having to leave a puppy at home - but crate training should help out ... Make sure you walk him before you leave for work - that should help with his morning routine. If you feed him in the morning, make sure you feed him, then walk him and don't leave food in the crate, just some water.
You can leave a toy in the crate - some people don't like this idea since the dog could choke- but just make sure it's a toy that he can't shred into pieces (the hard rubber toys, even ice cubes, Kong toys, etc.) , and he should be fine - if he does rip it up - then , no toys.
Usually, if he goes in his crate, he won't like it -that's the idea behind crate training - so, eventually, he may stop. But it's also a good idea to walk him as soon as you get home so he knows that he's going out as soon as you come in - as well as in the morning (and of course again, before bedtime). If dogs have a routine, they will learn to follow it - their rewards are walks with you - so he 'll look forward to the routine eventually too! Good luck!

If your puppy is not big you can always train him to go to the litter box i heard of many people with small dogs doing this also wake you early and take him for a walk the dog will tend to pee on every pole and it will do him good if you put him in his canel and then when you come home make sure you take him out again also you can measure his food feed him in the moring and then feed him when you come home also if you have a yard why not try to keep him out side while you are gone

Depending on how young the puppy is, he or she may not be able to hold it for 8 hrs. I think a general rule of thumb is the puppy can hold its bladder for 1 hour for every month of age. ( ie. a 3 month old dog can hold for 3 hrs ) You may want to try to come home on your lunch break to let it out.

well if he pees in his kennel then its too big for him b/c dogs wont use the restroom where the sleep but since its a puppy its still learning. i had to do this w/ my boxer puppy i just kept her in her cage and just cleaned the mess when i got home and told her its bad. when she gets older she probably wont do it anymore. full grown dogs are able to hold there bladder for 8 hours. i had to leave my dog one day in a cage b/c i was gone somewhere all day and she was in her cage for 10 hours and i came home and she hadnt used the restroom in her cage at all. hope this helps with your puppy.
