A favourite my Mom always made was strawberry short cake in the summer. She made sweet biscuits in the oven, split them while warm spread a little butter on them , then dished sweetened strawberries ( the secret was to sugar the berries and let them sit to draw out their juices, which soaked into the shortcake) in the middle of the biscuits, on the top then topped the whole thing with fresh whipped cream. My bday is in July and I always asked for this, rather than a birthday cake....mouth just waters at the thought of it. My grandma was a most excellent cook and she was famous for her baked ham and scalloped potato dinners followed by a home made pineapple upsidedown cake, served with either a dollop of whipped cream or some vanilla icecream. Our family always had gatherings with good home made food as a main component....good food, conversation and stories of days gone by...Does it get any better than that?

I don't remember much about what my mother cooked because she worked 11-7 as a CNA & because she died when I was 7(she was 32). But I loved it when my grandmother made Shepard's pie.

Well when it comes to my mom I remember the fried brains she would make, I loved them. Next to that it was the chicken and dumplings.
As to my Grandma I did not see her a lot as my dads job moved us away, we went to California and she was in Kansas.
I do remember the vacation we took to visit when I was about 12 years old. My grandma and granddad lived on a farm in Kansas. We were there for a week. My granddad, my dad, my brother and I went hunting one afternoon for rabbit. My granddad got one. We went back to the house and I helped my granddad clean it. That was what my grandma cooked for dinner that night and it was great. Fried rabbit is about the same as fried chicken. Doesn't everything taste like chicken?

My mother and both my grandmothers were *terrible* cooks! My father was the family chef; I learned everything from him.
That said, the women *did* each have their specialty, which were decent.
Mother - French toast, special, with vanilla and *just* the right amount of sugar to turn it that golden color.
Maternal grandma - "Crazy Soup", with beans, mince and mixed vegetables. Looked horrible, tasted divine.
Paternal grandma - "Antala", sticky-rice cooked in coconut-milk and sugar. Mmmmm...

Almost anything my grandmother makes is delicious. Her cakes are awesome, she makes the best cornbread and chicken and dumplins and pies. Plus I can wash it all down with some of her great sweet tea!
