I've experienced the same phenomenon. I think that after a while you forget how good it is and get used to pleasuring yourself. Then when you do it again you remember how good it is and want it more, until you forget again.
I'd also like to second the "be safe" statement made above :)

Basically when you have sex and orgasm, the need portion of your brain activates. Its the same reaction when you eat, drink, and do certain drugs. So your brain reacts to sex as a need. And so you have a need for it.
