Neither, kids don't need to or want to do repetitive exercise like adults can force themselves to do. If you are smart you will try and find a real sport your child can enjoy so that they can interact with other children while also getting good exercise and learning to follow coach instructions and be competitive. There are lots of great sports out there (soccer, football, baseball, lacrosse, basketball, swimming, dance) so hopefully something will interest your child. As for the overweight part, if he/she is only a bit overweight its no concern as they are still growing. However, if quite a bit heavy then you should encourage better eating habits. Cut out the juice's/soda's/chips/fried foods and replace with natural choices like fruit, whole grains, veggies, skim milk and water.

This is why he is overweight. He probably stays inside too much. Take him outside and try exercising with him. Encourage him to do things and tell him that he can go play with some friends around the area if there are any. I would say a treadmill would be better because it has smaller levels of walking for the start and then higher as when he starts losing weight. I think an exercise bike might over work him on the first day of trying to lose weight, especially when it's raining. You always have to take losing weight slow, if you rush in, you could end up having more health problems.

neither get your child on an real bike or get him or her outside playing games like tag, jump rope, hula hoop, or go to the pool and swim maybe get involved in a sports team. That will be nmore enjoyable for a 9 year old.

aj20031018 & Suze have the right idea. I would also go further to say that you should encourage better eating habits by eating better yourself. If you drink sodas and eat potato chips, your children will want to do the same. They look to parents as mentors and role models. Set a good example by eating right and exercising yourself. I can't stress enough how important it is for parents to interact and be active with your children. Also, getting him outside with other kids (whether for play dates or regular sports) strongly encourages social skills and development. I wish you all the best.

encourage the child to go outdoors biking..he would probably enjoy it better...if the child has less stamina maybe it would be a better idea putting him on a treadmill for a few days till he feels better...

I would think a 9 year old would hate either one of them. The best way to get a kid to exercise is to get him outside and play with him. Don't just tell him to run around- join in and play tag, catch, baseball, soccer- whatever he likes the best.
