What should I expect, and what are some of the attractions I don't want to miss? Or should I take the highway?

yea you should be fine! its a real nice drive just LOOOOONG! lol
Do me a favor check your spare tire and make sure you got a plug kit and one of those mini portable air inflater's and take it with ya! (bad experience last weekend in that area I don't feel like talking about right now LOL) and you may loose signal here and there, actually often! so just be prepared for that too.
Lots of "pull over take a pics" spots so bring a camera and enjoy! just be prepared pack a mini survival kit just in case. (sounds silly, but who cares)
good luck have fun and enjoy!

It's a beautiful and very safe drive. The route really isn't "back mountain" roads, it's part of the state highway system almost the entire way.

You don't need Map-quest or anything else, as you can't get lost. Just take Hwy 395 out of Reno to Hwy 44 right into Redding (part of the drive is a state scenic route). All you need is any $2 California State map, as it will show the route. However you don't want to be traveling to Oroville, it's not on the way to Redding. Make sure you gas up in Susanville as there are not a lot of stops until the other side of the Lassen National Forest. That brings up a very good and small side trip to Lassen Volcanic National Park. It's only a few miles off of the main highway and it is something you should see. After all there is a reason it's a national park.

You will have a great time.

My son and his wife made that drive from Reno to Oroville in January. The roads are winding and narrow, but it is a beautiful drive. There are no other attractions that I am aware of, except the beauty of it.

If you take the drive you may come through Oroville. You could stop in Oroville and visit the Oroville Dam and the fish hatchery. The visitor center provides 15 min videos of the attractions around the Oroville area, including gold panning, the fish hatchery, and nature walks.

Good luck and have fun. More importantly, stay safe.

by now most of the back roads should be open and cleared
you can take route 395 from reno to susanville then route 44 to route 89 and that should be the back way to redding .good
luck.

It is safe. This is America
It will take longer. You need to use Mapquest historic or long route. But enjoy the trip.

You may lose cell phone coverage in the back roads up there...just keep that in mind if you get lost or something happens.
