If you mean bathing regularly, washing your hands...that sort of thing, certainly, staying clean is healthy.

If you mean AVOIDING germs and "germy" things, to stay healthy...that's another story. There is a school of thought that occasional exposure to bacteria and germs challenges your immune system...and rather like lifting weights stimulates muscle development...little challenges to your immune system helps it grow stronger.

For instance, often parents who don't let their kids outside to play and get dirty and/or overdress them when they go outside often have LESS healthy kids in the long-run, because their immune systems are underdeveloped.

Therefore, obsessively avoiding dirty situations may be counterproductive in staying healthy.

Yes. Dirt on your skin harbors bacteria that could infect your skin, or there might be worm eggs, or microscopic worms themselves, which would cause disease. If you eat with dirty hands, you put harmful microbes on your food, and can get sick that way. If you don't clean the dead skin that you shed (it cakes on your body, with dust adn sweat), you can develop a bad rash, which can also get infected.

Some people argue that children today are sickly because they are "too clean", not exposed to enough germs to develop a good immune system. That's nonsense. You are exposed to plenty enough germs, you don't have to hoard any more by refusing to wash yourself.
