Is Fioricet Addictive

Fioricet (non-codeine form) is not considered a controlled drug. Drugs are classified by their chemically addictive properties. Using the DEA class system, Fioricet is not chemically determined to have a high propensity for addiction.

HOWEVER, taking any medication can become habitual. And, this can be destructive as well.

Remember, any drug is introducing something new into your body. Some drugs are needed to make up for a deficiency - (insulin products, etc.) or rectify a temporary condition (antibiotics, etc.). But, other drugs are simply quelling symptoms. It's important to stay in tune with your body so that you are not overusing any drug.

Fioricet contains acetamenophen, caffeine, and Butalbital. Butalbital is a barbituate, one of the most dangerous calsses of drugs to withdraw from. The dependence has a strong psychological as well as physical basis, and after high doses the withdrawal effects can include irritability, nervousness, inability to sleep, faintness and nausea, twitching, delerium and sometimes convulsions with may be associated with long term brain damage. Sudden withdrawl from high doses of Barbiturates can be fatal.

Heavy users are also liable to develop bronchitis and pneumonia (due to the cough reflex being depressed) and hypothermia (becuase the drug blocks normal responses to cold) and repeated accidental overdose. Most of these risks are increased if Barbiturates are injected, which is by far the most dangerous form of drug taking.
