Yesterday I answered a question rather ignorantly. When I said that I had little respect for people that CALL THEMSELVES Satanists, I was referring to the thirteen year old kid in all black saying he worships Satan to get a rise out of his parents. I was NOT referring to the Satanist religion, which, even though the name makes no sense to me, I respect as a viable belief system.

I sincerely apologize for the laziness that I exhibited yesterday in my answer, forgetting all about the actual Satanist religion.

And to make this a question, does any Satanist know why the particular name was chosen?

actually, curmudgeon, I got some mail yesterday about this, and at that point figured I should clarify. It's not about being PC, its all about realizing that I didn't want to be judged by this answer, because it's not how I normally am.

I wonder sometimes if we all don't get caught up in the rheotoric of calling things names and naming things to the minute trivialness of them, like every single thing that exists has to be this, or has to be that...I think a study of all religions and faiths would be an impossibly monumental uptaking because you can never really know what exactly is believed from a list or creed. It takes being an active, willing, and believing participant in any get together to truly worship whatever it is people choose to, but in the end it's always good versus evil, us against them. Satanists seems to me to be self-explanatory, what else could they be? The Fabulous Satanics?
And not to go off on a tangent, but I wish there was a way to know for sure if something higher (or lower, lol) and more loving hears me when I scream in my pain, just like someone who's a Satanist or Atheist, or Nothingist (one who has no beliefs whatsoever) and I doubt there is because of how many before me have had much louder cries. But I do know this, apology is a higher and more loving thing than all we know. Good for you, my dear. That's why I appreciate your opinions and thoughts...And if you truly want to be superlative to the fences of any religion, you need to realize that it doesn't take a window to see the sun. Everything that's made has a purpose for its time. I worry about us, sitting here pounding our thoughts into cyberspace for perpetuity ( if that's how you spell it) In other words, long after we're gone, this may be all that remains of how we thought and communicated. Most people only do so through electronic means. We are lacking the social interaction of person to person so very much, it's actually almost like a disease...So if Satanists can find comfort in each other, just as any other faith, and even if my son wants to join the cult that eventually slit each other's genitals and throat in the name of a Leprechaun, it's not for me to carry that burden of guilt. I instead try to foster belief in the positive, in the energy, strength, and wisdom of others and all around me, including Satanists, and my own son, an atheist. Life is too short to know anything for sure, but this I know: it's a bright, beautiful day. And what would Jesus do? Probably say "enough already...Go enjoy what you can." Satan would probably say the same thing.

People should practically believe any kind of belief should benefit mankind as a whole. Any religion that does not influence people to improve human relationship is worse than no religion at all.

You have taken your right step to reduce friction. Apology should be accepted. I do not study the Satanist religion so I cannot comment on it. I would rather stay with science and medicine.

I admire you for having the strength to admit your mistake and make an apology, and I admire your tolerance. That's really awesome! I'm not a Satanist so I don't know the answer to your question really, so I shouldn't even try to answer it I guess. But I think that part of the choice of the name is precisely because it is shocking. I think that it's an effective name for sending the message that this is someone who thinks against the norms.

Anton Levay picked it as a symbol and to mock the religious. Look if you want to get noticed an get a rise out of the Christians what could you think of that would be more effective?

Gazoo got it right, luv.

Now, stop beating up on yourself, as people will always be offended by something.

Your apology shows great character, though!

Seems to me that Jesus said something like: Get out of here, Satan.

You need not apologize to Satanists. Their system of destruction and anarchy disqualifies them for status as a religion. They torture and sacrifice God's creatures, and exalt themselves over Godly people. And the type the kids that do this are setting themselves up to where they can never get out alive.

Much that they do is a facade, and a higher level of spirit worship is described in a biography by Roger Morneau at www.revelado.org/cult.htm God miraculously delivered him alive from that cult so he can share his story.

Blessings, Balaam

I am a Christian. This name comes from followers of Christ. So wouldn't the same be true for them.

No Need to apologize...just preach the good news and you'll be fine.

All religions that are not in line with the Holy Bible and are not worshiping Jesus Christ as their personal risen savior are satanic.
