Cats are by nature nocturnal. So when you want to go to bed, they want to be up and hunt. Playing with them during the day will help them to expend energy and lead to a more restful night. You didn't say how old you kitty is. Is he a kitten? Do you have another cat? You might want to consider getting him a friend. Leave him toys he would like to play with around your house when you're not at home. Hide them actually. That'll give him a reason to 'hunt'.

Am I right to guess that your cat is around 6-12 months old? That is the naughty age. Be patient if that is the case, the older it gets the calmer it will be. If it is over 2-3 years old, play with him a lot in the vening and feed him just before you go to bed, so that he will be sleepy too.

My cat is the same way. He sleeps all day and then gets all hyper and crazy-eyed at night. I usually let him out at night to let him expend his energy.

If you can't or don't want to let the cat outside, perhaps try getting a bottle of pheremones at the pet store to calm him down. Pheremones come in a spray bottle that you spray around your house (DON'T spray it on the cat) and they supposedly will make the cat calm down.

Like someone above said, cats are nocturnal by nature, so it is natural for them to be more hyper at night.

play with kitty when before you go to bed. My cat is the same way, and after a half hour of her chasing a laser pointer, she calms down. It's just like a kid with too much energy.

You might start by getting him neutered.
Then give him plenty of activity during the daytime if you can. And don't forget to ladle on the attention as well. They are like small children, when you are distracted by work, phone or laptop..."Pay attention to me!!"
