My hamster is making a sneezing/coughing sound???? What is wrong? I do what regular hamster owners do. I clean the cage every weekend, change his water everyday, give food, bedding, and everything else! What is wrong wih my poor hamster? He doesn't have wet tail, so what could be wrong?? He eats fine and poops fine. He sleps naturally, and is active at night. He runs on his wheel and runs in his ball every night.
Please if you know what my hamster has please give me advice on what to do, and what he has. Thanks!

He may have a bit of a cold! If he is otherwise fine, I'd wait another day or so & if nothing else happen's, take him to the vet! If I recall correctly, hamster's can catch the cold virus from human's---they can also have flea's!!! If u have never had a problem with the bedding (regarding allergies) u use then I'd just wait it out. ZETA!!!

That hap pend to my hamster before, and he lived for 3 years. Take a heating pad and put it under the cage. Hamsters live in the dessert so they like it a lot. If that doesn't work go to the vet because your hamster should just have a small cold. Hamsters can suffer colds and are able to catch colds and flu from humans. Therefore if you have a cold or flu you should keep handling of your hamster to a minimum until you are recovered to avoid spreading your cold to the hamster. Hamsters can also catch a cold if the cage is exposed to draughts or are bathed.

Signs that a hamster has a cold are normally sneezing and runny nose. In more severe cases the hamster may have runny eyes, lethargy, weight loss, refusal to eat and drink or laboured breathing/wheeziness.

If the hamster exhibits signs of sneezing and running nose only and it continues to eat and drink and is active it should be kept in a warm room (not hot) of constant temperature and away from draughts. Some extra paper bedding should be placed in the cage and the hamster should recover within a couple of days. If the hamster does not recover after a couple of days or worsens veterinary advice should be sought as antibiotic treatment may be required.

If the hamster exhibits any signs of a severe cold (runny eyes, lethargy, weight loss, refusal to eat/drink or laboured breathing/wheeziness) veterinary advice should be sought immediately as antibiotic treatment is likely to be needed and failure to treat quickly could lead to bronchitis or pneumonia from which the hamster may have trouble recovering.

Giving a mixture of lukewarm water, milk and honey will also help with the hamster's recovery.

Provided colds are treated early before severe symptoms occur the hamster should make a full recovery within a few days.

Your best bet would be the vet. It would be hard for us untrained people to make a diagnosis. Besides, your veterianarian was in school for years so he would know what to do. Let the vet examine your hamster and follow whatever instructions he may give. Good luck with your little baby! Hope he gets better soon.

DO NOT PUT HIM IN WATER!! He may be sick and the bath may actually give him chills and make him sicker. Ring a vet and ask. This is too important of a question to rely on answers from this site. Hamsters are darling.

What kind of bedding are u using? If it isn't Carefresh then change to it ASAP!! It is the best bedding you can get! And you probably should call a vet and ask whats wrong or go to the vet!

he sounds like a normal hamster to me and it sounds like you take care of him well so I wouldn't worry too much. He may just have a little cold. Or he may be allergic to the bedding that you're using. Go to a local pet supply store and see if they have any alternatives to hamster bedding that you can use.

Ummm...... I know this sounds so stupid but it might help.! Well, once, my friend decided to give her hampster a "bubble bath" in the sink........... yeah, we can all agree what happened next, he started coughing and then he died. Sorry! Take you pet to the vet. Maybe it's his food or water. Please hurry, I do not want him to end up like my friends, it is so sad. so, take him to the vet, change his food, change his bed liner, WHATEVER it takes.! Sorry, I'm not that great in hamster knowledge!

I think it could be the bedding. you did not mention the air quality, if it's too cold or a draft on him. Try washing and drying the cage and activity toys you have for him.
